No I wasn’t expecting that at all even though I know there are people that do put a Rolex in a safe and I don’t see nothing wrong with that. I’ve not once said I wanted to invest in a Rolex to get rich or worry about my retirement, I just thought I start a light hearted thread to see what watch people would buy as a safe bet in the current climate where their value won’t drop too steeply and maybe get some ideas of some watches I could leave to my kids..and some of the replies here sound like I’ve offended them by dare suggesting that Rolex would make a good investment lol.

Either way a few people have suggested vintage so I guess a 5 digit reference like a Pepsi full set would make a good bet.

I asked a similar question and got roasted.... if you want a vintage model that's probably the best bet, for a NIB, I personally think the D-Blue is the way to go. Again you won't beat S&P 500, but if you're just looking for a pretty safe store of value I'd say go for it, plus if you ever need to you can wear it or sell, lol.

What watch would you buy now from an investment point of view? My budget atm won't stretch to an Hulk or Daytona.

Any opinions welcome.

I am neither a rocket scientist, fortune reader, or an economist. However, I would say that with the BLNR being the first ever two-tone ceramic, it might be destined to become a collectible that could demand a few extra dollars a couple of years down the road.

How about the 116655001100, if you can find one of those it will be the unicorn for any Rolex collector.

My 5711 Blue and 116500 are worth significantly more than what I paid for them at retail. I know, exception not rule....

Definitely buying a Rolex as an investment piece - buying my wife a datejust is investing in the positive emotions that this watch will bring!

X2. Forget the new models, they aren't investments - at least not for many years. They will depreciate for approximately 10 years and maybe after a decade has passed, they will they begin to appreciate in value.

If you want a fairly current watch, go back 10 or 15 years and pick-up a nice GMT II 16710 set or Submariner 16610LV set. Better yet, find a tritium GMT II set from the early to mid-1990s - they have appreciated very well the past few years.

18k DateJusts from the 60s and early 70s...Day Dates as well...stay with 18k...34mm none date models...Zephyrs, Bombe lugs...and 18k Rolex bracelets...20mm and 19mm. These are better deals because they are not high on anyone's must-have-today lists. But look at how the price of those old gold bracelets have risen...and look at the cost of a new bracelet. Gold has an intrinsic value that when combined with a Rolex movement becomes like a small bank on your wrist. If Armageddon comes and you find yourself wandering across a desert and you see a man coming towards you on a camel, with wife and an AK-47...you can trade him your gold Rolex for all three. He'll be happy and you'll be happy.
