Three Watches Every Man Should Own

Came across this GQ article and thought I'd share it. I generally shy away from "shoulds," however in this case I thought it was a bit interesting. Three categories of watches are Tool, Bar, and Dress. For me many of my Rolex fit into the first and perhaps the last categories. Really my Tudors and perhaps my Hamilton fit into the middle category. Curious how others line up and whether a Rolex (16013 of SkyD for example) can fit into the last category?

tool, dress, beater is basically the categories and its a good rule of thumb IMO. I dont have a dress watch as i have no need for one though.

I wouldn't classify any rolex as a dress watch outside a Cellini. A DJ or a DD is the Rolex version of a RO or a Nautilus. Smart looking watches but still not dress watches.

Any Rolex will cover that 3 categories easily. Tool, dress or beach!

I like how it's a category list instead of a brand/model list. This allows every budget to tick all the boxes.

GQ magazine has not been a authority of men’s fashion in decades. It’s a pseudo political rag.

Just because I am curious.
Can you tell me the difference between a tool and a beater?
For me these would be synonyms.

Lmao at them placing a Patek 5196 beside that Rado abomination under the ‘dress’ category. I feel sorry for anybody who follows this article, heck, anybody who listens to anything GQ says about ‘style’ to begin with.

probably price and your comfort level in wearing it in situations where you are going to beat it up. Its probably subjective to everyones comfort level. Most probably are not as comfortable using a 10k Rolex in high risk for damage setting. A rolex could be a beater for some and a g shock is a beater for others.

Definitely, a lot of Patek guys consider a Sub their go to watch for anything that might beat it up

we are just more proficient in wrist awareness than the average Rolex only owners. We have those Patek bezels to protect. Keeping a sub pristine is easy by comparison

The guy who brags about cheating on his wife and the guy who hits her when he gets home. I think both probably read GQ.

I wear a suit most of the week, so for me:

Formal (DJ 36 on black leather strap)
Workweek (DJ 41 with blue dial)
Weekend/Casual (SubC)

Small difference (imho).

A beater is something like a Seiko SKX. Only costs 150-200 USD, if you lose it or something goes broken you'll repair it or just get a new one. A Rolex SUB/GMT (14060/16710 and the ones before those models, I think the new SUB and GMT are more luxury watches than real tool watches) is a tool watch but I'm positive most people are being careful with those and don't want to see it broken or lose it.

I'm curious how that comment affects the validity of the categories? It's always interesting to me when instead of dealing with a question or issue the choice is to attack the source and ignore the issue.

I missed any reference to the article about beaters so I'm not clear about the delineation. On the other hand I believe that tool watches are more serious watches with a heritage of directed functioning where as beach/bar watches are respectable quality but much more under the radar in term of cost and recognition by others.

1. Daytona Ceramic in stainless steel
2. Pepsi GMT
3. SD43

Whose list is better? Mine or GQ’s.

If I was only going to have 3 I’d say:

Patek grand complication, probably a perpetual chrono
Rolex President 40mm YG either Silver, White, or Champagne dial
FPJ minute repeater

I’d be happy with that.

agree completely. DJ is not a dress watch. IMHO. But a sporty beast that you can wear everyday, even in a dress occasion.

In terms of rolex, I have these covered.

I think....

They would have to as their fragile and fussy Patek won’t stand even minor every day abuse.

I like your style

1. Black Rose
2. Explorer 1 short hands preferred
3. Speedmaster Fois.

Those 3 could cover any occasion for me.
