I’m doing OK, thanks very much Jim. Actually doing very very well for being out of surgery 76 hours, not too much pain, everything is working and I took several walks today, looking forward to recovery.

Yeah, too bad she couldn’t put that nine inches to use....

unfortunately I'm pretty young and far from retirement. Far outdone by many on this website. Some wildly successful people have admitted to me they use TRF, although they usually claim to "just read it sometimes" and "not have an account"

What is rich exactly?

Sure there are some people here that have family wealth. It not everyone. Lots of self made people on this message board. I'm one of them

I'm the only guy in my family that 'strayed' away from the family business and I'm proud that and I have earned everything on my own. No loans. No free lunch. No down payment on my house. No wedding gifts. Zero. Nothing!!! And my family is extremely well off. And this is because I'm an 'outsider' and proud of it!

21 years NYPD, final 11 as a Detective. Post that, 5 years as a corruption monitor for a major labor union in NYC. Now semi-retired freelancing in labor investigations and the occasional criminal case.

So pretty much I am now a bum getting fat off the city's dole (The Irish Welfare - AKA The NYPD pension)

And no generational wealth here, Mom was a housewife and Dad a machinist. My only options were the military, or civil service. I happened to choose both.

Right.

I left a job at PwC when my father had his 5th heart attack.

He looked, from his hospital bed, at my brother and I and said, “I don’t have the money to retiree, and the business is failing, I need help”.

My brother backed off. I stepped forward. The business had 3 employees at the time and was in endless debt.

16 years later I now have over 30 employees and I was listed on Inc 5000’s list of fastest growing companies.

Over the last 16 years I’ve paid my father a nice salary, and then some. I’ve paid off what he spent on college, and likely my first 18 years as well.

I remember the days when I picked up toilet paper one week, and paper towels the next because I couldn’t afford both in one trip to the supermarket.

My first shop was in a swamp. No heat in winter. No ac in summer. No doors on the bathrooms. Destroyed in hurricane Irene and then again in Sandy.

No generational family money here.

You are mostly right I think. I really do. Family support through professional school and so forth, family business. I know of quite a bit of that here personally. Some won’t admit to it. Most wont. But the help was there. For me though that’s just not the case. I am from such dire straits I would be to ashamed to say it here and how poor I was. Worse than poor. Most would not or could not understand. And most would not believe it anyway. I had no help. None. Now I split time between two countries.
