Sell or no sell?
If you have multiples of a model and decide you really like one version over the other, would you or should you sell it?
I do want to get a Daytona for myself and do worry that selling anything might jeopardize my relationship with the AD. Would like to get folks’ thoughts. |

I would sell anything I don't wear regularly! Offer to sell it to the AD first and explain why if you are concerned

If I owned watches I didn't want or wear anymore, I would have ZERO reservations about selling them for as much as I could get for them.
If selling something you own has any impact on your relationship with your AD, you should get a new AD. And rethink the value of even having an AD. YOU OWN THEM. THEY'RE YOURS. DO WHAT YOU WANT TO DO WITH THEM. |

Yes, I completely understand that this is generally the case. But personally speaking, I have zero interest in what Rolex thinks and would never make a buy or sell decision based on it. I fully understand that line of thinking won’t earn me any brownie points with an AD or with the manufacturer. But fortunately, I don’t care. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

If it's a popular model purchased recently, you risk jeopardizing your AD relationship if caught. That being said, it isn't common for people to be caught

I feel a bis strange about the fact that I have to worry about something like this.
I don’t consider it flipping a watch but it only matters what AD thinks and that’s why it concerns me. I really do value the relationship and want to have it for many years to come. If I sell, it’s not because of money so by definition not a flipper. Just wanted to get feedback on here as I’m sure folks have thought of this before. |

Your AD does not care about you. They have your money. Do what ever you like, but I for one would not personally keep something I’m not going to wear.

Do AD’s follow the grey market enough to identify flippers?

I really doubt most dealers care what you do with the watch once they have your money and the transaction is considered complete, beyond perhaps contractual obligations to the mothership.

But they care about with Rolex thinks and they don’t want to get on their bad side. No watch for you!

Do watches of Switzerland offer fair prices if you were to sell back to them?

I wouldn't buy something I don't want and if I bought something that I ended up not wanting I would sell it. I don't care what other peoples' opinions may or may not be about how I treat my personal property.
If I particularly like a model I tend to go for a SS and a TT because they can look and feel quite different but still be based on a loved reference. I haven't started adding PM yet and I probably won't. So your question kind of overlaps with my collecting model but doesn't apply. I like to keep one of each. Your watch, your choice, your money. |

When I got my BLRO in December of ‘18, I had owned my BLNR from the same AD for around 14 months. Within a few weeks I knew the BLRO was my favorite so the BLNR went to the curb. I know many folks here want one of everything but I don’t keep pieces that aren’t getting worn. My SA knows I sold it and it hasn’t put me in their bad graces. I do think the timing and reasons matter. My current pair are keepers.

I never sell something I like. Sometimes I buy a model, wear it a few months, sell it, miss it, buy it again, and sell it after a few months again.
It’s ok to buy and sell, as long as you wear them IMO. It’s very possible you liked the watch in the boutique, but noticed you hate it when it’s under the sun. For me, that’s all TT models. I buy, I wear, I sell because every time I give it a chance, I find myself looking at it thinking “I wish that was PM”. |

If you don't need the money to purchase the next watch, keep it for now and sell later after you get the new watch from your AD.
I don't understand why some people bought something and suddenly didn't like in the short time. For me before I decide to purchase a new watch, I have to make sure that I really like it, that is why I haven't sell anything in the past yet. I am good at buying but not selling.

My AD does not seem to care. I told them I was selling my black ceramic Daytona and wanted a white.
Basically got the white Daytona for free and pocket about 6K. |

If you’ve owned the watch for more than a year you should be fine. Holding a piece for a year gives you explanation capital just in case.
It takes a long time to develop a relationship when you’re not dropping thousands every month on stuff you may not necessarily want nor need. I’ve been told that I get pieces (not often) because they “know” I am not a flipper! OP’s concern is a valid one if he wants other pieces at retail. It’s the game…. |

when i own a watch, it's my watch to do with as i choose.
i'd never make a watch buy or sell decision based on anyone's feelings or priorities other than my own (or my wife's). these conversations drive me nuts! |

If you own something, it's yours to sell. I think the only off-putting behavior I'd be concerned about from an AD perspective would be if I was repeatedly selling a client the same or similar pieces over and over and they seem to be disappearing. I've sold AD purchased watches to well known grey dealers when I fell out of love with them, but that's usually after quite a bit of ownership time. I almost never sell a Rolex unless it's for another Rolex.

I’d ask the AD since they may want to buy it and have for sale as pre owned. Most would buy jewelry and watches.

It's not like the AD is paying someone to scour the internet looking for every one of the hundreds (or thousands) of watches they have sold over the years to make sure someone is not flipping it.
If you want to sell it, sell it. |

I would only sell to fund another watch.
