Have you regret going into vintage watch?

this pretty much sums it up for me, my only regrets are the ones that got away, two in particular and both because of my own stupidity. A gorgeous double red that I said to the seller "you're not going to get a better offer than this", he did

Ok ok so maybe I exaggerated just slightly … haha all in good fun, I promise….that wasn’t directed at any one in particular, I was just ranting more so about the petty complaints I’ve read and continue to read about a watch that’s often times twice the age of the buyer - and that uneducated individual typically has a lot of super unrealistic expectations….I mean would you rather a vintage piece that’s polished to hell and back or an unpolished example that shows the true life of the watch and where it’s been?? All my three Rolex along with a Tudor watch are over 30 years old - a 6694 Oysterdate from 1959, a 1510 Date from 1971, a 15053 Date from 1987 and my Tudor is a 1984 Prince Oysterdate 75000.

No regrets with any of these. Rolex are built to last, providing you look after them.

This said I would like to pick up a modern Air-King or Oyster Perpetual at some point along with a Black Bay 58.

I would suggest picking up the Tudor and sourcing a newer 93150 for it. That is a great combination!

I only regret selling some to fund modern gold pieces. It is ok because they provided me a great return on investment. There are five that I wish I could have back.

I'm also Vintage all the way, 80% of my watches are Vintage, I live in an hold Brownstone with Eames chairs, ride a 1974 Chevy side-step pick-up, often wear vintage Army jackets,

No regrets. When I started collecting in the 1980s with income to actually acquire vintage Rolex I searched mostly for Bubbleback models. I rarely found them at a price I could afford. I did come across a lot of sport models, so I ended up collecting them, I guess that worked out OK.

Since you may have concern about wearing daily, I found that I like the feel/movement of some vintage models but not the "older" look. I prefer a bit newer appearance.

I have a 145.022-78 with Omega replacement hands, dial and bezel ring. It has the vintage feel, an 861 caliber movement, but looks newer. To me, a vintage watch that has been refreshed.

Maybe a hybrid set up would be a good place to start?

As well a vintage watches, I’ve collected nearly 500 fountain pens in the past 15 yrs - here is just one tray of my Parker 51’s- showing the plums (highlighted), british and usa burgundy, teals, etc.

I think i have over 130 P51s at the last count !

Vintage is so much fun and so great that it's easy to forget it's not for everyone. I think this is more about knowing yourself and less about the watch in question. I mean, there's terrific options with modern Tudor, snowflake hands and blue dials and all. I love scarred and used and archaic. Universal Geneve Tri-Compax, right? Triple date, moonphase, chronograph (3-register!). But you had to WIND the sucker every day! Yes, I ride a 34 year old motorcycle, BUT I had a custom seat made to cushion my enormous geriatric posterior. I love vintage, but have no great fondness for sacred and sacrosanct when it comes to artifacts. Go ahead and enjoy. If you kill it, it makes the others rarer and more valuable. End of rant.

Hey OP, I personally would go for the 79090 over the 79190. As they say "plexi is sexy" - there's nothing quite like the charm of the plexiglass and so long as it's pressure tested, it should be fine for the beach and light swimming. Rolex and Tudor sport watches from the 80s and 90s if well maintained and serviced, should remain pretty accurate and durable. The sapphire crystal on the 79190 might probably inspire a little more confidence on water resistance, but at the expense of the charm.

Vintage vs modern is really a matter of personal taste. Just like whether or not you prefer modern cars vs classic cars.

I had a wake up call when I tried to take notes by hand. Worse than my kids writing! Much better now thankfully. A quality pen helps a lot!

I just love vintage and, wear a 1970s as a daily, the only downsides to me is the lack of lume and the requirement to remove when showering or swimming. Thats always been a PITA so I've become used to it. Sometimes I think of getting rid and then the sun hits it unexpectedly and it says "You've got to be kidding"
