Another new guy saying hi
Just wanted to pop in and say 'hi'!
I found my way to the forum while doing a little research on my Submariner as I'm on the verge of sending it in for service. This will be only the second time it's gone off, the first was in 1999. I'd wanted a Rolex as long as I can remember and was finally able to buy my watch new in 1988, and have rarely taken it off my wrist since purchasing it. IIRC, the new price was $2,800. After a little digging around here I've discovered that it's a 168000 which seems to be a little bit of an oddity in that it was only produced for a very short while as Rolex was updating and changing the stainless steel as well as the movement itself and this particular model fell in-between the two changes- I'm sure most of you already knew that though it was news to me, for me all Submariners were the same. (I'm learning a lot!) Despite my 24/7 use, the watch remains in pretty good condition with only a few scratches here and there. I'm debating on whether or not to change the bezel insert or to leave it in place as it does show signs of wear, otherwise the watch works reasonably well even if it's accuracy is a little off these days. There are two Rolexes in the household, my Sub and a Ladies Oyster that I bought my wife to celebrate the birth of our son 23 years ago. I'm definitely not a collector though, but I do appreciate the particular qualities of these timepiece and fwiw, my now adult son has expressed an interest in someday owning one. I hope he does. It's been fascinating for me to read the threads here. Prior to joining, I had no idea that Rolex watches had such a dedicated group of enthusiasts, though on reflection I guess it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise....some of the other forums I frequent (guitars/photography/fly fishing) are similar in depth of knowledge about the respective subject. Anyway, just stopped in to say hello and Happy New Year- hope it's a great one! |

Thanks for the warm welcomes everybody
Re: the bezel insert, cop can you share more of your thoughts? Currently the bezel (aside from a few light scratches) has a 'ding/chip/scratch' on the uppermost corner of the triangle surrounding the pearl. So much so that it's is no longer white but the base black is showing through. It's not overwhelming or too conspicuous but I was thinking of making the watch look a little better with it's service. I assume that there's some 'originality' value in keeping the original insert in place. Does Rolex return replaced parts like this do you happen to know? fwiw, I'm not particularly concerned about any kind of resale. I've owned the watch for 30 years, and hope to have it for another 30! Thx- |
