An Idiot Abroad: Anyone Watching This Show?
Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant have produced a show currently being broadcast in the US on The Science Channel called An Idiot Abroad. (It's already been shown on Sky.) The concept involves sending a rather dull, unworldly bloke who works for them (described by Gervais as a real life Homer Simpson) on a tour of the world and filming his travels. Karl Pilkington, the main character, has no filter between his brain and mouth, and having traveled to China where the first episode was filmed, he says everything that one thinks when exploring the country.
The show is not for everyone, but I found it hilarious. Upon visiting the Great Wall of China and seeing a den of bears at a tourist-trap exhibit, he says, “What is this all about? It’s almost like they know the Wall isn’t that good so what else can we give them? It’s not a Great Wall. It’s an alright Wall.” After visiting a public toilet which features no actual toilet, doors or toilet paper, he can't believe "that the iPod came from China." He says "These aren't people who need iPods. These people need toilet paper." If you have a slightly warped sense of humor, I highly recommend this show. It's wickedly funny. We have had the whole series screened over here in the UK. It's as funny through all the 6 episodes. I don't much care for Gervais these days but Karl Pilkington is an absolute sream - like you say he comes out with some unbeatable one liners!

I thought the show was hilarious as well. I'll be watching the rest of the series for sure. My only complaint is that Gervais laughed way too hard and stuff that wasn't very funny (speaking more about the preview show). It got a bit annoying after a while.

Saw the "alright wall of China" episode and found it pretty humorous. But, Gervais isn't very much of the show, it's more the "idiot" going abroad and Gervais only plays a very minor part. Funny though!
