To my eyes (because actual measurements don't matter), the dial of the 36mm Explorer looks slightly larger than the dial of the 40mm Submariner.

This is why I strongly believe that the 36mm Explorer is better proportioned than the 39mm version.

Once you get the numbers out of your head (36 vs 39) and focus on the visual only, the choice becomes easier.
This is a great example. I had a 39mm Explorer and thought the proportions were wrong. The dial to me seemed to big. I traded for the 36mm and am very happy. The OPs discussion of the bracelet is interesting. IMO, one of the reasons the 36 works so well is because of the 20mm lug width. It wears bigger having the same bracelet width as the sub. Stick with what you have.

+1 for NOT flipping the 36mm for a 39mm. I hated the 'flashiness' that came with owning a Rollie OP 39, so I barely wore it (or wear it to this day). I wet back and forth just like you, 14270 vs 114270 vs 214270 vs mk I vs mk II etc.... I read a ton of forums, and comparison threads. I liked the EXP 1 watch for the look, history, and how it wasn't super flashy. It's funny I guess, because my Breitling and Omega are brand names, and very expensive as well, but unless you're into watches, people don't know about them.

I just wanted to go on record and say, the 36mm Rolex is the perfect size Rolex for me. I have a 7.5" wrist. I took the bracelet off and there a field strap and bund pad on it. WOW, I am in love with this watch. The best part is that it is understated, and nobody asks or wonders what type of black dialed watch I have on a bund... It's not too small, the proportions are perfect.

I went from a 214270 to a 14270 - 7" wrist

The 36 is more stealth. Less polished bezel to catch light, less wg on the dial.

The Exp mk2 is just perfect as my daily beater. It's my first Rolex too :)

I totally agree. The Explorer 36 is more balanced

Although you don't like watches, people know Omega and Breitling unless you live inside a bubble.

To me the 36 is perfect. The 39 feels bloated and its bezel too thick, a la DJII.

Contrary, I do love watches and time pieces. However, people who are between the age of 35-55 aren't incredibly familiar with Breitling and Omega. They do know Tag though. Anyway, here is my Exp 1 with bund.....

I do love watches, however if you speak too anyone between 35-55 they may not know what Breilting and Omega is.. That being said, the 36mm are perfectly proportioned.

I’m gonna have to take the 36mm side. It’s dainty proportions give it a really classic and authentic feel. Like it’s not trying too hard.

Explorer mk1 or mk2 (a matter of prefference) is perfect both as casual and dress watch. OP is primerly a dress watch for me. Despite this Explorer wears more flat despite the same case size due to flat bezel. If we go down to 36mm sport watches at this dimention for medium and larger wrists are today simply small. Pictures make optical illusion that it is big but it is small watch. And last but not least OP like DJ can be found at any AD wheares Explorer like other SS Rolexes is not available immediately. Explorer rulez.

It thought I wanted the Exp, until I tried on the 39mm OP, which I purchased. I returned to the AD a year or two later to try the Exp again, but walked out glad I own the OP. That big flat bezel on the Exp spoils the piece for me.

6.75" wrist here. I do not like the 36mm Explorer. It looks dainty.

I like a 36mm OP but the Explorer looks better at 39mm.
