The Platinum Izumo "Sea of Clouds" fountain pens.
I finally got around to taking a picture of all four of the Sea of Clouds Platinum Izumos. The design is based on the ceiling painting found at the shrine in Izumo. Since the shrine itself is torn down and rebuilt every 60 years the paintings on the ceiling have changed over the centuries yet always reflected the same general theme.
Each pen is hand turned so the exact weights and dimensions vary somewhat as you can see in the Boring Details. And so here they are: From left: Taisha Yagumonuri, Togi Yakumonuri, Ginsen Yakumonuri, Byakudan Yakumonuri I guess a little more information on the naming might be of value. The first pen in the series is named for the main building at the shinto shrine, the Izumo-Taisha. One of the traditions of a "Taisha" is that it is torn down and rebuilt every 60 years. The general form of a raised gabled structure remains constant but other than that the size and design can change. The last rebuilding began in 2008 and completed in 2013. In this version the clouds are outlined in gold. The second in the series was the Togi. Togi refers to rubbing and in this version the designs were built up by multiple layers of different colored urushi that was then rubbed and burnished removing some to show the underlying colors. Next came the Ginsen (silver wire). The maki-e clouds on the Ginsen are outlined with silver wire. And finally the Byakudan (Sandlawood) with its glowing redish color to reflect the color of the sandalwood incense burned in the shrine. |

Hey Jim. Quick Question...
Hi Jim,
When and should you get a minute, would you mind telling us what Izumos these are? Since acquiring my first Izumo, I am becoming very interested in their many Urushi and Maki-E creations. I am coming to the realization that the Izumos are a very overlooked pen.'' Like I mentioned. Only if you have some time. You may have already provided this information somewhere so if you can point me to that post it would very appreciated.

Here are a few other Platinums to consider:
Three Izumos: Akatamenuri, Soratamenuri and Kuro and the AD 2000 Aizu urushi which was a limited edition of 300 pens. It is urushi done in the Aizu style which is burnished rather than polished and over a hand carved ebonite base. |
