Date change

A curious question from a 1st time Rolex owner (of SD43) please.

Do Rolex watches generally do a quick date change when the time reaches at 12am? Or date only changes after 12am?

It may or may not happen exactly at midnight. I'm never up that late, so I'm probably the wrong guy to ask.

It can happen +/- many minutes depending on when the hands were attached to the movement. If it's way off then the hands can be "reset" but that requires a visit to the service center and disassembly. Dont think it's worth it personally and would live with it if you are having that concern.

it almost NEVER happens exactly at midnight. In fact I've never seen one that flips EXACTLY at midnight.

As mentioned above, it can be midnight plus or minus a few minutes.

Agreed. My SD actually changes at 11:55 or so. I really couldn't care less. As long as it changes that's the important thing.

My DJ41 changes at around 12:07. It’s a nice deep clicking sound.

Having replaced hands on 3 of my (non-expensive) watches, I don't blame Rolex for not having it change precisely at midnight. You'd have to sync a machine precisely when the gear "finger" makes contact and pushes the date wheel gear. You'd never be able to do it without microscopic precision.

You'd think with the cost and quality of these little machines they'd be able to change right at midnight.

My 16610 flipped almost exactly at midnight until I got it serviced. My 16570 flipped at 11:59 on the nose prior to service. Now they both flip a couple minutes after. Doesn’t bother me.

Oh, and my brand new 116710LN flips at 12:04am every night.

I would argue if you want mechanical perfection a Rolex is far too cheap.

If the date jumps at 5 mins before or after midnight that is an ‘error’ of 300s. Or said another way 99.65% accuracy.

As one of the people that must work to that standard I’d say most other industries get away with much lower quality workmanship.

For a $1000 watch not to change date exactly at midnight is laughable. For a $10,000+ watch not to change date exactly at midnight should be criminal.

Shouldn't COSC certification include date change +-2 seconds as well? It certainly should.

Easy to say when you don’t know how it works.

In the final minutes before it changes over a sudden movement/impact/clapping your hands can cause the changeover earlier than usual. Keep in mind most brands don’t use an instantaneous changeover like Rolex does so we already have it good

I’m with Larry, never up that late, but if I roll it over manually it seems to happen right near 12 am.

Grand Seiko changes on the second, every time. Please don't misunderstand my intentions here. It's not about GS over Rolex or vice versa. It's just that I'm amazed how people are so anal about accuracy of their movements and how much they pay for them, only to not care that the date change is not on the money. Other manufactures get this right, so can Rolex.

GS gets it right, switches on the second every time. Why not Rolex?

My 16610: perfect to the second.

My DD40: is about 4 min past.

My SD43: I've never checked it. I probably will now, though.

My apologies, it appears that's only for their quartz line.

My SD43 makes a very satisfying click and date change at 00:02:25 (at least this only time I checked). My LVc did it around 45 seconds past midnight. Never checked my others.

I am usually sleeping and have no real interest as long as is shows me the correct date when I wake up.

Have to agree about most have no idea how a mechanical movement works cannot see any problem as long as it changes by next day.But today many Rolex owners like to have a good moan about their watch trivialities afraid you cannot please some.

(For probably the first time), I completely agree with Peter. Mine changes almost all the time at seven minutes after midnight, which I am absolutely fine with. For those seven minutes if I am desperate enough to know the accurate date I have more serious problems then my watch switching at exactly midnight. My Seiko for example, ambles its’ change and is somewhere around 3:00AM before it’s complete. I personally don’t have a problem with this but some people might get annoyed at seeing half and three-quarters of a date at one and two in the morning. It is also a $300 watch.

Point is, the quick change of a Rolex is a high-end feature in itself, and unless there is an EXTREME delay of an hour or more, I don’t feel getting it at exactly 12:00:00 is even remotely important nor indicitive of a lapse on Rolex quality.

(Now, if you REALLY want to stir up trouble bring up the crown position question )
