My 1960s 5513 valued doubled in < two years??

I had a 1960s gilt 5513 Submariner restored November of 2016 and had an appraisal done at that time. I've contemplated selling it and have a legitimate offer of a bit over double what it was appraised at in 2016 and a suggestion to consign with a suggested list of of about 2.5 times the 2016 value.

I'm wondering if part of the reason the value has doubled in shut a short time is the record stock market? People feel they have more money to play with and buy such things? If the stock market were to tank, then I can assume value could drop dramatically?

I guess I'd like anyone's take on whether they believe the values of gilt dial 5513s will continue to rise and therefore whether it's worth my holding on to it for another decade or two......

Yeah, its doubled or more... Could be the stock market, could not be... Generally speaking luxury items are impacted by economic downturns but they also recover...

If you don't need the money why do you want to sell it? You had it restored, are you wearing/enjoying it? If not, sell it, we are definitely at all time highs but no one knows the future. You'll get some PMs I'm sure...

At any rate, post pics. We like gilt subs :)

OP, it's anybody's guess. I bought a nice 1964 gilt Sub from Jacek a few years ago at under half of today's prices. It has the rare gilt hands, too. It's done better than most of my other investments, but I hesitate to wear it when I think of what they sell for today, and I wonder if/when the bubble will burst...First world problems, I know, and risk of #humblebrag. (Not for sale, BTW)

I'm guessing it will be like the stock market; fluctuations in the short term, but an upward trend in the long term. Five years from now, people might be kicking themselves for not getting in at today's gilt Sub prices. I passed on a Daytona Big Red at 16 grand a few years ago only because I'm not a big Daytona fan. Now they go for 80 grand plus...

Take-home message: Just enjoy what you like. The value is in your enjoyment of the watch, not what you can sell it for.

The watch I'm speaking of was already featured in a previous thread under the Watch Gallery section. I had titled the thread: 5513 Restored! and created the thread on 11.30.16.

I can't figure out how to link that thread here or the extensive pics.

Thanks for the reminder. I should probably get this re-appraised one of these day. (And apologies for the “one lug is thinner” “definitely looks over-polished” “crown guards don’t look right” “wrong bracelet” awful issues with it).

Nice faded inserts here; it illustrates well why ceramic is boring.

Given that we don't know what your original estimate was back in 2016, nor what the current valuation is, it's hard to say!

Original appraised amount was $13k in 2016. Highest current est. value so far is $35K

Weren't some of the old 6xxx digit Daytona's still going for 30-35k like 2 maybe 3 years ago? I'm shocked seeing everything is now 50k plus. Just look at the 'new' Zenith Daytona's who are already at 30k.

These numbers mess with my head to be honest. Not because I want to sell them and make money, because I want to have one before it's too late.

It may be coming back. A nice one recently sold for £50k on auction. Still a lot of course but less than half a year ago.
