$18K for 1675 gmt 1978 with relumed hands??
Hi,
I'm being offered this full set 1675 from 1978 for $18,000. However I'm confused about the hour and minute hands, seller says its all original, but not sure. They kinda look relume (but I'm no vintage expert) hence, why I ask opinions here. What you guys think? Pics below |

Why don't you just ask for a UV pic? I feel like you've asked about relumed hands many times and haven't posted any UV photos haha

Thank you guys. I liked it, that's why I asked here for opinions but I'm afraid is as you all say. I'll pass.
Amazing. It could be original and not relumed but his unwillingness for an UV checkup will lose a sale. |

Unfortunately, UV test doesn’t buy you much these days. Tritium or luminous material can easily be mixed into the relume material for consistency. The tritium on the 24 hr hand looks cracked at the tip.
Lastly, assuming the hands are relumed, $18K for what looks to be a full set MK5 is not too bad. Of course, I can’t see the case, movement or bracelet to fully evaluate the watch. |

One can always ask this question and it’s impossible for anyone to answer with certainty based on a few photos. It’s nice to have everything original but relumed hands don’t have to disqualify a watch entirely. Find a watch you like and buy it.

A full set for $18k even with relumed hands seems like a good deal, given prices these days.

If seller can’t handle this basic request, then I would look elsewhere. A correct UV test involves taking a video in dark room and running it until the light is removed and fade is complete. Easy to do with phone and UV light. Relumed hands may not disqualify, but they do have less value than original.

The hands don't stick out as being relumed and the slight colour difference suggests otherwise, 18k for this watch is not bad, it ticks all the boxes and in this sellers market this watch will sell quickly enough without the dealer having to go the extra mile to do a UV test.

There are people who are grinding up the old tritium lume that is removed from hands and incorporating it into new lume compound, while also color-matching it. In these cases, the response can be very similar since the old phosphor is incorporated

A UV photo on the OP’s example might show inconsistencies, and you’d have your answer. And if the UV photo shows perfectly matching lume, then you can either accept or do further tests, including taking out the loupe. Either way, a UV photo is always helpful when trying to ascertain originality. Just because it’s not foolproof doesn’t mean it’s not important. |

Get the UV video or move on if seller won’t comply. I don’t care about watches moving fast or not. While there are tricks being done these days, the test is still helpful, as is close examination with a loupe of the hands compared to plots if you buy and have an inspection period. Relumed hands texture will look different. I care about spending my money and knowing what I’ve got. Believe me, it matters if you ever want to sell or trade in the future.

OP has moved on from this watch and posted another watch on a new thread.
I agree, UV can provide clues, but I never put my eggs in that basket. |

Something seems off, no way that watch was sold for $18K @ Tropical.

The person who bought it is reselling it to buy another one, he is collecting for a gilt one. He sent me the link from Tropical so I can get a better view of it, he is not a dealer so he doesn't have uv lights. He buys to keep and sells one every once in a while. Indeed, is this one. |
