Authorized Service Center or Local Shop

I recently purchased a 1999 Submariner 16610. The watch is in beautiful shape. It has never been polished and, based on the wear, looks like it spent a lot of time in the box.

The watch loses about 25 seconds a day consistently. I would like to have the watch serviced as I’m sure all the oils have dried up, etc.

QUESTION: I have a local watch repair shop that works on Rolex. Not an AD. They are multigenerational and have a great reputation and have been selling/servicing used Rolex for decades.

Am I safe to take my watch there or am I better off taking it to AD and having them send it to authorized service center? (probably Dallas - I am in Colorado). Price is about the same $795 plus parts. Local turn around a bit quicker (4 weeks). I don’t think I want it polished.

If you don't want it polished than local. Otherwise RSC direct, bypassing the AD.
I would never let a jeweller polish a watch

I had my 16710 sent to RSC in NYC and requested no polish. It was not a problem and the watch was serviced and NOT polished. Just ask. If it were me, I would send it in with instructions not to polish and get the warranty card from RSC.

You can call RSC Dallas and they will send you a shipping kit, If the price is the same I would use RSC and get the two year warranty. Turnaround time shouldn't be much more than four weeks.

Personally I would send it off to Watch Buyer's Group out in Pasadena, CA. Their service is $395 plus parts and they cover shipping both ways. You can specify if you want them to do any sort of polish (like a light polish vs. a full polish). A few friends of mine have had their Rolex and Omega's serviced there and they were more than happy with it. They also give you a 5-year warranty.

I had a less than stellar experience with RSC recently. Probably wouldn't take anything to RSC at this point unless it was a warranty issue. If you do decide to use RSC, I would HIGHLY recommend taking it to a local shop right after the service and have them put it on a timegrapher. Basically double-check RSC's work to make sure they serviced it properly.

Are there no AD's with Rolex trained and supplied workshop in the US like in Europe? Can't have just two Rolex authorized service centers for a large country like that?

For anyone who is reading this thread... three words BROWN PAPER TAPE... it is mandatory when sending to Rolex Service Center. The instructions they send are very clear. I only mention this because I could not find it locally. HOWEVER, it was available for free at my local USPS and they allowed me to wrap the package at the counter.

There are AD’s with Rolex trained and supplied workshops. I’m intimately familiar with one.

would certainly like to, but that's not up to me. I was out in Lititz in 2008 and 2010, but my was account was shut down for a few years before i got it back next year. So...soon, hopefully?

I’m not a fan of telling people what to do, I prefer sharing my experiences. For what it’s worth, I have sent three of my Rolexes directly to the Dallas service center. Every experience I have had with them as positive, and the watches have come back looking and performing great.

And, as one of the posters mentioned above, always send the watch by registered mail, with brown paper wrapping, and brown gummed tape.

Five weeks and about $800 later (for those following this post), it’s like brand new. Very light polish, as requested, to go with the full factory service - Dallas RSC.
