Rolex Explorer 1016

Hi guys,

I want an expert advises on that watch. I am more into GMT Master and do not know so much about the Explorer. I have read a lot about it last few days but now I want some expert advises.

I am selling one of my GMT Master 16710 from 1991 (L Series) with Pepsi insert, without Box nor Papers. The watch runs perfectly and has some signs of use (that's normal as it's from 1991) but overall is in a very very good condition.
I buyer came to me and ask for trade with a Vintage Rolex Explorer 1016.
I do not know if it's a good deal as I am not really keen on vintage Rolex Explorer.

Here's the details:
Rolex Explorer Ref. 1016
21x Series (obviously from 1969)
Comes with the original invoice from 1972 (but no Box nor Papers)
The watch also comes with original bracelet Ref. 7836 and an other bracelet from the 80' Ref. 78360.

What do you think about that ?
Many (many) thanks for your help.

I’d say that’s a fair trade, with a possible higher value on the explorer than your GMT. If you’re not a fan of the explorer though it may not be the best trade for you. Otherwise it looks like an attractive early matte dial explorer.

Your watch is likely around $9,000 and his is worth maybe $18,000? I’d be suspicious but if everything checks out and it’s a face to face deal it sounds like you’re making out

I want to sell mine 9.000
He is claiming that his watch worth at least 10.000
I have checked on Chrono24 and seen that Explorer Ref. 1016 watches from 9.500 EUR to 25.000 EUR full set (which is not the case as the watch comes without Box nor Papers)

As I am suspicious, I just wanted your advice regarding the pictures he's sent to me...

You say no box or papers but what is the paper dated to 1972? Looks like a very nice example of a 1016

His watch is worth double yours easy (if everything checks out, naturally)

He said this is an invoice not certificate from Rolex.
And his watch comes without B+P.

I have seen on Chrono24 example of watches going from 9k to 25k
I do not know if allowed but here's a link to a 1016 on Chrono24 at 10k for example (link).
If not, I apologize in advance.

No problem. That example has a very weak case. There are plenty of listings on various forums (and sold listings on eBay) for which you to compare apples to apples. To me it’s a no brainer if the 1016 is in good condition.

if the 1016 checks out I would make that trade in a heartbeat. I own (and love) both but there is something really special about the 1016. Cost wise any good examples of a 1016 are in the mid teens and up lately.

Your image shows a warranty booklet dated 1972, not a receipt.

My question would be why is the booklet dated 1972 if the watch is 69...you can expect them to typically be a year off...not 3 years. So unless the serial number is on the paper, I would not even consider the paper to be associated with the watch.

Also unless the seller is just not educated on the current market, the price is a red flag to me. Generally (but not always) if it's too good to be true...it is. So be careful. Its not easy to properly assess the watch from a few photos online.

But as others have pointed out, if its all good its a great deal.

I like the 16710 more, but like others have chimed in, the trade is so lopsided that it is hard not to make it as you will wind up with a more valuable watch.

The 1016 is worth more than your watch for sure, especially how nice the condition of it is. The two bracelets is a bonus as well. I would do face to face and ask for better photos of the hour hand. Most likely lighting but the outline of the hour hand looks off to me.

Also, as stated before, why would this guy trade his watch unless he is clueless about rolex values. if it checks out, youre going to make out like a bandit.

I'd take that trade. It's a good looking 1016, and like others said, definitely decisively higher value than your 16710.
