yes, he drives, i think mainly around the estate, no word on what happened yet, the man is well liked in britain, done a lot for the young with his award scheme, says it like it is, people could learn a lot from him.

Story from the BBC.
The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a car crash while driving near the Queen's Sandringham estate, Buckingham Palace has said.

Prince Philip, 97, was not injured in the accident, which happened as he drove a Land Rover out of a driveway onto the A149 shortly before 15:00 GMT.

The other car involved was a Kia. Two women in it needed hospital treatment - they have since been discharged.

Eyewitnesses said the duke's Land Rover overturned during the collision.

They said they helped the duke out of the vehicle. He was conscious but very, very shocked and shaken, they added.

Norfolk police said it was force policy to breath test drivers involved in collisions and both had provided negative readings.

The duke is back at Sandringham and has seen a doctor as a precaution.

Good to see he wasn't hurt especially give his age.

I think the family could pony up for a driver?

Good no one was more seriously hurt. Sounds like the Duke may need an eye exam.

I doubt that anyone should be driving on public roads at 97, particularly someone who could have a full-time driver. Nevertheless, good that he (and the other parties) were not injured. I have always enjoyed his forthright manner and pithy utterances.

It’s hard to accept our limitations as age separates physical ability and mental capability. Reaction times, eyesight, spatial perception, etc. degrade with different trajectories.

I know some 17 y.o.’s who prolly drive worse than the Duke.

Senile old coot needs to let his chauffeur do the driving so he doesn't injure someone.

i like the man, but if age is what did this, its inexcusable on his part, and his advisors to be risking the lives of innocent people.

My neighbour who died last year was mid 80s and a total menace on the road, he actually said that he bumps into cars all the time, including ours,

A horrible arrogant pompous man he was, with zero regard for other road users and pedestrians.

if a 97 year old can roll in a land rover and survive that needs to be the new marketing campaign. seriously

all the airbags deployed so it was pretty extensive from the look of it.

Because he loves to drive?

My great grandmother was driving at 101. She was a safer driver than I was at 21.

I wonder how you"ll feel if your lucky enough to reach his age? Granted if your capabilities are such you are a danger to others that's one thing, however we don't even know for sure who was at fault as far as I know.

I certainly hope whatever age I am lucky enough to reach I'm not such that too many of my faculties, abilities and freedoms are impaired or diminished.

prince phillip has a crash

Take my driver's license away from me before I'm 97 years old and especially if I'm a Prince. Let the Driver take you to run errands and take the Bugatti, Lombo, Ferrari or whatever out for regular spins on the track. You can have it closed just for you and run Balls Out!

PS- Good to see the Prince is ok.

I agree that some are picking on the prince because of his age.

While it is true that the elderly often lose their ability to drive at some point, the occurrence of an accident is neither a necessary nor a sufficient cause to make such a judgement.

The driver of this Morgan probably isn't half the prince's age:

FWIW, he looks very good for 97. There are plenty of 60 year olds that are in worse shape.

And that crash could have happened for a number of reasons.

Edit: I was mixing up Phillip and Charles.

People shouldn't be driving at that age.

i absolutely think age or not people should have to be qualified to drive. The problem is a 97 year old hasn't been tested for 80 years. IMO everyone needs to take a driving test every time you renew your license. Its madness to not expect a person to show they continue to be competent .

I haven't driven a car in 8 years, however when i go back to the US and drive again its no questions asked. Imagine if your airline pilot took 8 years off and showed up tomorrow for your flight. Did any laws change while i was gone? no idea and no seems to care or are concerned.

I tend to agree there needs to be more stringent laws regarding testing aging drivers in the US anyways. That said, I can’t imagine a congressman attempting to stand behind that change when so many of our elders vote

Thankfully automated cars should solve a lot of this down the road.

Age is not the issue, rather his general health.

He had a hip replacement 8 months ago, an operation I’ve known take people a year to recover from who were 30 years younger than Phil the Greek to start with. He has been in and out of hospital several times in recent years with various infections. He retired from public life two years ago, meaning he deemed himself (or was deemed by others) not healthy enough to accompany Liz to the opening of envelopes and cutting of ribbons. None of this screams “healthy enough to drive”.

Tyler is right though, you can’t know if someone is competent enough to drive if you don’t test them.
