Buying a 1680 Red

Hi guys,

I'm reading the forum regularly and I've decided to move into the Rolex Vintage world !!!

Since years, I've been amazed by the 1680 Red. The price is quite high so I know I won't get a meter first or a full set watch unfortunately. But, I want to do a good acquisition obviously. That's why I curious about your view on this one. Thanks a lot !

lots of chips on the minute markers = i would avoid or pay accordingly.

the patina is not great.

the insert is skinny font.

far from a good example.

Also ... the difference in color/patina of the hands near the center post would bother me and could be a sign of oil staining. And what's up with the date wheel? Looks as if it's not fully aligned, which could be a sign of movement trouble and/or a worn date wheel.

I'm sure someone can list an Air-King for 100k if that makes anyone feel better.

As a counteroffer to this one, I’ll cut someone a great deal on my 1680 ft first mk 4 without box and papers. Let’s call it an even $40k? Please let me know who’s interested and I’ll send my wire info. I’ll include free bubble wrap in the shipping, and a well-used 93150.

First come-first served! While supplies last.

Finally, this was not the one ! Chilling on various sites, I found something : no paper, polished again and again, not everything perfect ... but I felt in love with this crazy meters first dial, amazing hands and ghost bezel. So here it is.

The 9315 bracelet is nice but too fragile. I will go for a 93150 upgrade, leaving the 9315 in the safe :)

Very nice, congrats. Nothing fragile about a 9315 unless it's in bad condition.

Make sure the serial number is in the right range for that dial.

Hi guys ! It’s been few months and I’m still the happy owner of this 1680 Red from 1969. I’m wearing it about 80% of the time, leaving the other in the safe. It is a wonderful piece. I had the opportunity to meet two different professional sellers to have an expertise. It is interesting to have the professional view. But at the end of the day, whatever their view, I do love this watch !

The problem is that when I first bought a Milgauss ~10 years ago I thought I would stop there... obviously not... now looking for other interesting pieces from vintage, to youngtimer and modern : 5512 or 5513, 1675 blueberry, 1665 DRSD, 16610 LV Flat four, 116500 LN ... difficult to choose, to find a nice one at a fair price.
