The true reason the Nautilus is impossible to get

The person who started the trend is Future. He was the first rapper to constantly bring up Patek in his songs over and over. For some of you who don’t know who he is, he was by far the biggest hit maker of 2015 2016 and 2017.

His other buddies from Atlanta, the Migos have been rapping non stop about Patek.

Some of you might scoff and say it’s because of (whatever your reasoning)

When you have the NUMBER ONE artists in the world for the past four years talking 24/7 about wearing Pateks, you have the demand that now follows. These guys aren’t wearing 36mm perpetual calendars or dress calatravas. Nautilus, Nautilus, and more Nautilus. Mainly because it’s sporty and since it’s on bracelet, you can flood it with diamonds.

Since Rolex is so abundant, these guys had to go the next level to blow cash. (Patek and AP)
These guys also are half the reason the 15407 is a pain in the ass now too.

I know this is a tough pill for some of you to handle but it’s 100% the truth. The number one selling music genre is rap. On top of that you have the number one artist rapping it all the time (Migos just broke multiple Beatles billboard records). It trickles down to everyone else in pop culture.

For all you who want a Nautilus and it’s now out of reach, thank them.

Didn't one rapper buy a Naut blue dial, kept dial and 'threw away' the remainder of the watch and used the blue dial for a Patek that never came with blue dial?

Of course there's DJ Khaled and his blinged out Naut. Still see more Rolex than Pateks, yet yes Pateks are now for rappers.

Good post.

A couple of my non-WIS friends have been bringing up Patek randomly, and not so coincidentally, they've been listening to Future and Migos. Just the other day I also got a Snapchat from a friend with a picture Patek AD display with some lyrics from Future.

Ironic that years ago, Patek owners rode on their high horse about AP being the watch of rappers, now the tide has turned.

Yup, not just rappers either. I've seen NBA players wearing Pateks and recently saw Connor McGregor with a 5726. Seems like celebrities are going from AP to Pateks.

Despite being somewhat near the age group, I thankfully have no friends who listen to those artists

Loads of soccer players and film stars wear them too... Thats always going to be noticed by their fans too

I think people wear them, and want them as they're perceived Highly by everyone. Then the more you realise that, the more desired the become. Its infectious. And self fulfilling

Rich people buy fancy stuff... Cos they can... Without perhaps really being passionate about it. .oh how the other half live.

If you're flashy enough, people will take notice. I could see how that helped Patek to be more main stream. Culture II is fire~

Sure a few rappers have Pateks, but you really believe that the listeners are buying them and thus causing their scarcity?

Yes. These guys make it cool.
Athletes and actors/actresses follow suit.
Then the new money rich jumps on hard.

When you have millions of rich young people, and only a few thousand watches what happens?
I secretly think TS is paying Future. (Dior, Nike, etc already do)

maybe not the average listener, but it makes it pop culture popular. There are tons of people with more money than they know what to do with that will happily put some in a Patek, regardless if they are in to watches or not.

I first found out about AP from Entourage... sad but true. It was several years later before i bought one, but that put the brand on my radar as i didn't know who they were previously. I suspect this is similar with Patek and the rappers.

Very true TNG11

Nobody cares about what Ed Sheeran on John Mayer wear outside of Hodinkee. Future and Migos have generated enough revenue in music to put Elvis to shame. Turn on the radio and it’s a Migos song, change the station it’s another Migos song. Turn it off, then turn it back on..... and another Migos song.

i dont mind when anyone wears them personally. Im not a fan of blinged out watches though. As long as the person is wearing a watch i personally like (like that 5980R in the above pic), if they are a rapper or a pop singer it doesnt matter to me.

Very true. Entourage was the hot thing back in the day and really put AP in the pop culture forefront. Man I completely forgot about that!

I just watched a video (AP vs PP Nautilus) where allegedly Genta designed the Nautilus for women.

Great post DeeTee! Totally agree with your thesis. Remember Gents, Future/Migos didnt make the Nautilus desirable for you specifically. Some of you have been collecting and on these boards when these rappers were in primary school. These celebs are pushing 2nd hand 5711 prices from 10k above retail to 20k above retail. Why are these rappers picking up Patek and not AP anymore? well of course novelty, publicity after the NY exhibition, low interest rates, good stock market etc. We are all influenced by taste makers. Most people on this forums have huge respect for John Mayer who is clearly the Heir Apparent to Eric Clapton in the watch game. Of course on the other side of the world, there are plenty of people with disposable money who want to be like Future/Migos and the watch is more approachable than the Lambo, Bentley truck etc. Im from ATL and can honestly say these guys are garbage compared to Outkast but hey, to each his own I suppose
