Nothing will beat the elegance of a 36mm dressy datejust. The proportions of the watch are dressier and more classic than the DJ2 - If that's what you're wanting - accept no substitute. The DJ2 however is a great alternative for those who just cannot feel comfortable with the 36mm. It is also a great casual watch due to the sportier size and big bezel etc. Try on both - what feels better?

Well I just purchase my first rolex and it is a datejust 1601 pie pan. I searched and pondered and pull the trigger on it.. I previously had larger watches and found this dj just wears so nicely.. DJII very nice but if buying 40mm or larger it would be a sub ..

Love my silver stick dial on jubilee DJ. Simple, elegant and works great with a dress shirt. Still my favorite watch for wearing with a suit.

I'm a new date just lover. When I first joined it was all about the sub. I used to wonder at the very idea of who liked these fluted bezels and even diamonds! Now I think the most perfect rolex in the world might be the 16013. I'm thinking of picking up a second hand one. I can't do diamonds yet (thou now I get why you'd want to) but I think the jubilee bracelet and fluted bezel look incredible.
I think I eventually got my head round watch as "functional" male jewellery. As in I think "hey a dj would look great with a suit and its a killer watch and waterproof etc". I also suspect I've just been conditioned by rolex aesthetics here on the trf over the last year. I think the dj11 look great but when I saw them at the shop they did look pretty big though those were smooth bezel models. I'm about a 7 nch wrist or more but I think the classic size will be ok. Whilst some of the 16013 might be a bit tired, I've been impressed at how reasonable prices are. Seems like 3k can get you seething quite nice and serviced too. |

P.s Sean uk. Love the turnograph. That's a watch that at first I did not really get but now I think it's a bit of a bargain sleeper in the range. Nice one!

Love the datejust. Mine doesn't get as much wear time, usually I'm more casual. But a great suit or church watch.

As this post is about DJ's, I shall share.
My first Rolex, a 1987 SS white dial Roman numeral 16234, was stolen in 1990. It was replaced with a TT version. 3 Years ago I passed it to my daughter on her 16th. In the last 5 years I've been craving my original stolen model, but have held of obtaining one. The reason - it's won't be the same. |

You may not find a NOS sitting in it's case but the closest you will get to one is a second owner and they are being snatched up by collectors and first newbie buyers/investors all over the globe so better kick up your heels and make the search for one the most fun time of it all. True that it wont be the same as you being the first owner but there is always one out there that have only been worn on special occasion etc. Get a trusted AD to help you search for one and you will be amazed of what is still out there before it's gone. Do it as there is always a second chance for a Rolex. Good Luck! |

Hello again my Canadian friend.
We just crossed swards on a different post just now. It's not as sad as I perhaps relayed. I saw a nos one a year ago for $4200, but passed. I would rather remember what I had. Current favs are 16550 creme dial non rail, 1680/8 purple tropical dial, 16528 porcelain, 16622 with substituted red date wheel & 116263 Japanese market green seconds hand ltd ed. What are your favs? |

I believe they still have them around in the used market as opposed to the newer models now being released as like re-issue models but in larger dial size. I think going back to almost vintage specs? I would get anything from early 90's as they are still quite new and available in the pre-worn/used market. The 70-80's circa are out there but hard to find a well taken care of timepiece model, else they are the keeper ones that's why they are not readily available. The caliber 3135 is a proven engine mechanism that withstood the test of time and until now being used in higher end Rolex models. Omega couldn't even surpass the caliber traits of the 3135 even with their new offering of the P8500 caliber movements. Some say its a derivative of the popular 3135 in house Rolex caliber engine, but only somehow changed in placements and appearances. Cheers! |
