Movement service from Michael Young

I have read a lot about the great work Michael Young does on bracelets. I was planning on sending him my Explorer II bracelet for a restoration, but I also have an Air King that needs movement service as well as bracelet restoration.

The question is has anyone sent Michael Young complete watches for service?

The post office claims that I can not send watched to China, any thoughts on this?

I would really prefer killing to birds since I'm already having to send the bracelets out to him, but I don't want to risk the watch.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Michael did the bracelet of my 5513 a few years ago. Like you, I wondered about having him service the watch as well. He declined, saying between US customs and safety reasons it was not something he recommended.

I'd have to agree, far to much risk involved, and not something I'd even consider.

About to pick up a couple of watches from him after service. Pretty nice shop, definitely doesn't go cheap on hardware.

I had two vintage pieces serviced by him. He kept everything original for me. No case polishing, nothing done to the crystals etc. Not Rolexes though. One was an old Tissot which used to belong to my granddaddy and a Grand Seiko from 1969.

You are in the US, MK recommends not to send a movement to HK for service. Get you watch service by someone in the US.

Anyone here in the states sent a Case to him for service?
Is there too much risk?
I am still going thru the archives but am not seeing much.

This isn't responsive to your question, but you could send the entire watch to Rolliworks. They do movement, case and bracelet and excellent work.

Movement service only RSC for me, double the price but who cares.
Casework or bracelet Rolliworks if you live in the US

Over teh past year I had Michael Young rebuild by bracelet and they did an excellent job. I had my movement serviced by Rolliworks and was very happy with the results. Two vendors I highly recommend.

I reached out to RolliWorks but they couldn’t accommodate me in the building up of my lugs. They said it’s too much surface area to cover with laser welding.

Unfortunately, the RSC service is not consistently smooth and professional-across the board. Just recently, a TRF member had a Submariner 14060M returned with a non-authorized service dial installed-without the owner's permission. If that had been a valuable vintage 1680 or 5512 gilt dial-the value of the watch would have lost 50% of its
vintage collector grade value. My 1680 50 yr old red Submariner MK IV has never seen the inside of an RSC-and never will. A trusted independent CW 21 like the Ridley family
or Rik Dietel is the way to travel with vintage Rolex references. Caveat emptor-its your valuable Rolex.

RSC will not change a dial without confirmation from the owner.
It's costly so they seek approval. When handing it in you can instruct them not to touch the case or appearance in any way.

Exception being Koln in Germany, this RSC insists on changing tritium dials for new ones, requirement by law I believe, otherwise no service.

It's the aim of the RSC to make your watch run within specs and indeed not to preserve the vintage appearance.

The watchmakers you mentioned are the better choice for servicing a nice 1680 such as yours.
Any ordinary old watch 5 or 6 digit I would go RSC

If laser welding won't work, what is MY going to do?

The labor for the welding seems to be cheaper in HK, so perhaps there's a willingness to do more of it within an 'economically sound' repair?
