Reminiscing

I remember the day I went looking for a Rolex for my wife, she chose from a large selection. Same when I went looking for a black tie suitable Cellini. Remember when I got my TT Datejust, and my Explorer II. When the opportunity arose to buy a Sub Date the clerk went in the back and brought one out. My daughter got her MD, got her a Rolex which she chose out of several models.

Then, overnight they became rarer than hen's teeth. Haven't bought one since.

I'm not one for playing keep away.

I passed on my father's Air King to my son when he graduated from college, a true workhorse, he wears it with pride. A true vintage model, better than a Timex, takes a beating and keeps on ticking.

Why do you think they are rare? The second hand market is completely over saturated with Rolex models.

I only got into Rolex a couple years ago, so the current climate is all I know, but I do hope it all dies down and the investment crowd/mentality goes away.

Since we are strolling down memory lane…back in 2018 had all these to choose from at the AD. I held out for a SS Sub date. I do sometimes wonder what could have been…..

USED, Second Hand Market. I was referring to New in the Box at retail Rolex. My AD is like all others, give us your name and one day we may decide to call you, with the caveat Past Performance is not an indicator of Future Performance.

Reminiscing….this was taken Monday June 24, 2019. Don’t focus on the DJ I’m holding, look at all the watches in the case…it was full. The had 2 more full cases as well. Pretty much anything you wanted. It’s sad what retail has come to now.

In 2017 I visited an AD to look at a 114060 Sub. They also asked me if interested in a Hulk or BLNR, which they had in stock as well. I passed on all 3 at the AD and bought a 114060 across the street from pre-owned shop for 15% below retail…

I purchased my first Rolex in April 2017. In December 2017 my AD called and said there was a BLNR with my name on it. I happened to be at an AD in NYC and they had nothing to sell--ominous sign of what was to come. My AD still gives me grief for passing on that BLNR although I purchased one a couple years later. Now I'm selling that BLNR cause I have too many GMTs and I prefer the BLRO.

I bought a 114300 (OP39) in white out of the display case in December 2019. There were so many Datejusts and others like Yacht Masters and Explorers; I wish I could have purchased them all!

I remember sometime around 2016-2017 I walked into my AD just to browse (I was in the area) and I was talking to some sales associate that I had never met or seen. She complimented my DJ41 that I bought from her father/uncle (my main salesperson at the time) and told me she had something in the back that I might like. She came back with a BLNR on oyster (before they came on jubilee) and offered me the same 15% discount I got on my DJ41. I turned it down!

I paid $5300 for a sub date with a 10% discount in 2008..nearly every model was in stock. They had a 2007 gmt they were discounting as the new ceramic model was rolling in. The good ol days

Yes, I remember those days fondly. Picked up my Subdate, as pictured, in late 2017.

My grail and favourite Rolex back in 2015. Paid €7,600 grey for a YM40 pt dial NOS stickered B&P when RRP was €11,350 where I live. AD would discount 15%.

Dial can be swapped for blue or slate at the RSC if bored with pt. Best Rolex purchase ever to me.

Was offered a Hulk and Sub 114060 from AD in 2016 with no purchase history, but passed.

Managed to score a SD43 mk1 from AD in 2017 stickered with no purchase history. Then a TT blue Sub41 in 2020 from another AD again with no purchase history. Lucky days. Not too shaby for a commoner like me.

After that, hype on the Internet killed the hobby, for someone not willing to play AD games. Now it's all about buying jewellery first, which I don't care for. Not complaining though.
