Submariner 5513 bezel issue

Hey everyone hope anyone can help..

Someone’s selling me a 1984 5513 sub.. upon inspecting the watch i noticed the bezel sliding and both clockwise and counterclockwise.. is that normal? Also, would it be expensive to fix? Any help would be appreciated! 👍

Cheers’

Good to know!

Also, I noticed that to set the time, the crown is turned counter-clockwise to move forward.. normal?

This is gonna be my first vintage piece I’m still trying to learn the ropes.. thanks!

And if you are not going to use it for timing your diving, it is IMOP preferable in many ways to subsequent model unidirectional bezels.

And we will of course need pics if you get the watch!

You can switch the 5 digit Sub spring to a GMT spring if you want bi-directional movement

Ideally it should stay in place and you should have to push down to turn the bezel on a 5513

Rolex introduced the uni-directional bezel for the Sub in 1981, so an original 1984 model should not have a bi-directional bezel, as far as I know. Unless it was maybe changed later. I would try and find out before you buy it!

For subs they introduced it on the 168xx which came out in ~1978. A 5513 (and all other 4 digit rotating bezels) had the bi-directional friction bezels throughout production.

You're confusing the Sub and the Sub Date.

All 5513’s have a bi-directional bezel that does not click. What you ask above about the crown and direction of the hands is normal. Crown turned counter clockwise turns the hands forward on the 1520 movement. You may even notice a little gear slack which can cause the hands to jump a little. Totally normal as well. Enjoy your 5513. Post pictures when you receive.
