VERSUS: Vintage Submariners
Seventh edition of the "VERSUS" post/picture. What is "VERSUS"? Well, I thought it would be fun to compare two watches (and only those two watches) and discuss pros/cons by outlining the differences and getting folks' ideas/thoughts/opinions on TRF. We got folks here that have been collecting and studying these things for decades all the way to those who are just starting to venture into the crazy world of Rolex (and everyone in between). Therefore, it would be fun and educational!
For this edition, we have a showdown of vintage Subs. The classic 5513 and its brother with a date feature, the 1680. Which do you prefer and why? Previous VERSUS: 1. VERSUS: Submariner 1680 v. 16610 2. VERSUS: Rolex Submariner and Sea-Dweller 16610LV and 126600 3. VERSUS: Rolex Submariner 16610s 4. VERSUS: Sea (Deepsea 116660) to Sky (Explorer 1016) 5. VERSUS: Submariners Vintage and Modern 6. VERSUS: Datejusts with Unique Dials

5513 no question.
To me the uncluttered, balanced dial says it all. I really prefer a sub without a date. |

5513, same reason. Uncluttered.
What I so love about Rolex is that there is such continuity in design over decades. A Sub is still recognizable as a Sub decades later. |

1680! I love the look of the cyclops on the acrylic... it seems to magnify even more.

Less is more. .
No date all the way. I could never get over the cyclops. I think it takes the pretty away.

Ideal preference: 5513; dive watch. Practical preference: 1680; I don't dive and never seem to know the date.

The 5513. A classic design that was produced concurrently with four consecutive Sub Date references.

Matte dial 5513. The symmetry! And also the Bond watch!

I never liked a watch without the date feature, seems I need to tell time a lot and check the date frequently. So it's always a 1680 for me. The cyclops seals the deal as the iconic feature of a "top hat" crystal. But alas I'm also the owner of a 1680 so that tends to give me a bias towards the 1680.

Surprised to see the overwhelming majority here preferring the 5513 given the recent rise in 1680 popularity. I think the sticker shock of red 1680’s is pushing some toward white 1680’s. That said, I also lean toward the 5513 for the 2 line simplicity.
