Inappropriate Times to Wear a Rolex?

Overheard a portion of this conversation while at Nordstrom's. A male customer was asking his wife whether or not he ought to wear his watch (no specific brand mentioned) while taking part in an upcoming Civil War reenactment. She apparently had no answer and replied that it was strictly up to him.

Which got me to thinking. When one is actively participating in a historical reenactment (i.e. Renaissance Faire, Civil War, colonial Williamsburg et al), should the watch be left at home? While it is always handy to have one on, I'm picturing things like portrayals of King Henry VIII waving a turkey drumstick and wearing a GMT, a dancing harlequin sporting a vintage Submariner, a Confederate soldier awaiting word on Vicksburg and checking his TT DateJust, or a colonial blacksmith with a Daytona pounding horseshoes on an anvil.

The same might be said of having a smartphone on hand as well. For it to ring (and be answered) during these various historical reenactments would seemingly appear kind of ludicrous to onlookers and attendees (i.e. one of the Founding Fathers responding to a incoming text message).

Surprisingly, there was no mention of carrying a pocket watch in lieu of the Rolex/Omega/Seiko etc.

Wear the watch and mute the phone. You never see short sleeves in these historical things. No one will see the watch.

The Oakley glasses on the other hand...

I would say that if you are volunteering at a homeless shelter. Bad time for a Rolex. Everywhere else should be fine.

I feel like it’s never an inappropriate time to wear a watch or Rolex for that matter.

Honestly I think doing a period reenactment would give me the perfect opportunity to try and find an appropriate vintage time piece.

I would enjoy the challenge.

Fortunately, I was nearby and heard the rest of their conversation. It was savage.

--- Honey, do you respect me as a husband and provider?
- Answer that for yourself.
--- Noted. Should I buy a Day Date?
- Go for a two tone DateJust. Half gold for a half man.

Valuable items such as jewelry, watches or fancy clothes may look out of place in some environments but it's up to the owner to judge and not me.

Wear one whenever or wherever you want. I think a lot of people give too much credit to how many people actually know what a Rolex is. I’m telling you most people have no clue nor care what we have on our wrists. For the most part the only people we are impressing or not is ourselves and fellow watch enthusiasts

If they have watch anachronisms on hundred million dollar movies with enormous props budgets, they can on this.

Alexa doesn't know.

My advice is that if you have to wonder about the appropriateness, then it's probably best to wear something else.

I believe Omega has a deal with the James Bond franchise, which has nothing to do with Daniel Craig. He is free to wear Rolex as he chooses. Except as Bond on the silver screen.

Because this is such an interesting topic I asked the wife and she said, "during a Mud Wrestling Match!" I did Not ask her how she knows this.
