Wearing a Gold Watch

About a month ago my wife bought me a 116618LB.

I love the look. What I didn’t expect was how that gold would feel on my skin. I really don’t know how to describe it but it is very different from the experience of a SS watch or even a gold watch with a leather band. I noticed this feeling within the first few hours of wearing the 116618LB and thought it would pass. It has not.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Not so much with gold watches, but with platinum yes, the density of that metal is awesome on the wrist, especially a sleek watch like the Daytona.

For me it is mainly just heavier, nice to have both gold and SS for the transitions.

Has a nice luxurious heft to it.

Oh, no fight.

I really didn’t plan to wear this watch everyday but that is what has happened. Just don’t want to take it off.

Congrats on the gold watch but that isn’t as important as the fact your wife purchased the watch for you! I need to have a chat with the old lady tonight.

We had a board of directors meeting yesterday. She made me show all the board members. I think she is very proud of the purchase.

Intriguing. I need to make a trip to my AD and try on a platinum or gold Daytona. Never had one on my wrist before.

Only feels different in that it is heavier. Sorry, it is not magical, nor does it make you into a super human. It is just a different metal but still a metal just like steel. My 2c

That feeling on the skin is one of the reasons gold has been sought after for thousands of years. What you are feeling is the same thing a Pharaoh felt, why gold money still has a pull today - rich, weighty, drawing warmth from the touch. Gold is very nearly alive and you are fortunate not only to possess it but to have that connection to history.

Gold is one of the higher conducting metals while steel is one of the lower. Gold also drapes around the wrist more due to its weight. I wear gold everyday with only the occasional steel watch now and then (more for novelty). PM is my thing.

Sorry, but you’re clearly not a PM watch owner

OP: you're going to post about your gold sub and not show us any pics? Really?

Agree with Mike, that feeling when gold around drapes your wrist is incredible.

Why would he be, if it has no positive impact on him? There are plenty of members around here who can afford PM, but aren’t interested. Heck, I recently sourced an old NOS folded links Oyster bracelet, because I wanted my watch to be even lighter and more comfortable.

I know the feeling. It eventually passed for me and now I like the weight of a SS or Gold on an OF much better.

Obviously you do not know me or what pieces I own. I have an 116610LN and a 116618 LB in my stable amongst others. Does wearing an all gold piece feel good, of course but I also enjoy my stainless pieces. Gold is not "magic". It is more of a psychological feeling, especially for those here who are new to the PM experience. YMMV

This is about thermal conductivity (W/Km). Here are some numbers:

- Copper has 400 W/Km
- Gold has 315 W/Km
:
- Steel has 50 W/Km
:
- Wood 0.2 W/Km

In other words; gold feels warmer more rapidly against the skin compared to steel - simply because gold transfers (absorbs) heat quicker (better) than steel.

So - as already said: It's science so don't fight it.

x2 Only I wish PM was my thing! Gold is warmer and reassuringly presses on the skin due to its weight + gravity. Owning both SS 16710 and YG 16628 with similar bracelets this is very noticeable.

Which is why I sold my 166500 and kept my gold 166509; I found I just didn't wear the SS version, nice as it is. I only keep watches I use regularly. Otherwise I feel guilty.

I was wearing PM Rolexes only for a year or so and with no frame of reference I forgot it weighed any more than SS of course, then when I tried one on again the luxurious heft and gravity-defying lightness of the two became suddenly apparent. I now like having both in my stable so I can enjoy the benefits of both metals in their marvellous contrast.

If you feel guilty just get yourself a £100 SS and force yourself to wear it for a day and then when you strap on the PM again it will be magic... I mean Heaven as Tom rightly says.
