I noticed that a lot of the SIHH 2010 releases were lower cost watches with built-by-Panerai movements like the PAM 351 and 359.

I also noticed that in their website they no longer have the category manifaturra which used to be the category of Panerai watches with in-house movements. So their "manifaturra" watches are now lumped together with under the categories contemporary and historic.

Yes, I think this is good. It will thin the herd and there will be a lot of new innovation this way.

Don't bet on it. The new manual wind calibre looks to be identical to the Unitas movement except for the addition of two unecessary cogs to wind the barrels.....

I'd expected at least something different or an improvement in some way.

I think you'll just see all the watch companies copy the 7750, unitas and ETA movements but just change the placement of a few wheels slightly......

ETA no longer have to legally supply movements to any watch company, as of sometime in the next couple of years. That is why Breitling etc etc are all starting to make there own. Until recently ETA was legally required to supply movements on demand. But as of a few years ago this was overturned and the number of ETA supplied has dropped significantly each year.

I think I'm the only one not excited about in-house movements. I agree with the post above. It is a slightly modified 6497. Oh well, hopefully those old crappy ETA's will drop in value!

My understanding of the ETA issue is that they will stop supplying disassembled movements, but will still be supplying fully assembled movements. I do not know if swatch will stop supplying movements. Doing this will cut there volume, and consequently increase their cost.

In 2009 the cheapst PAM with an in-house movement was just under US10K. This year they have PAM's with in-house movements which should come out to below US8K.

I agree with Bryan above--not sure cost is the issue. From what I understand in talking to dealers --you can not knock off an in house movement and there were a lot of fakes making their way into marketplace--whether that is true or not--it made sense to me.
