Absolutely! It's not like you'd be creating some environmental disaster removing one ancient apex predator from Florida... Have yourself some gator nuggets & a few new watch straps.

Good man, and perhaps a pair of shoes and/or alligator belt as a bonus.

Am glad some here are afraid, Florida is 100% FULL. So ya'll should consider moving to NY, or NJ, or even better go live in the Republic Of California

FL: We don't need anyone else moving all up in here. We're good

I am confident you will be thrilled to hear this, but I could not agree with you more.

Spent the first two months of the year in Delray Beach. Then back and forth to see the parents. Just got back an hour ago actually. Flew in yesterday to surprise them for the holiday.

Anyway, Florida is PACKED. People everywhere. And while a fun place to visit, I have firmly decided I do not want to live there (this is the part I figured you'd be thrilled about). Certainly not yet anyway. Might have no choice in the future. But that is another story for another time.

And the savings that people get just does not seem to be there. Not anymore anyway. And again, all the people. Yikes.

In regard to OP, gators ARE scary. Those parents are nuts. I would not let my dog close, let alone a kid.

Thank goodness. Fantastic news. We don’t want anyone else moving here.
:)

Just kidding…

Also, it depends where you live down here. It’s definitely not more populated compared to where I moved from. That’s for sure…

coming from the guy that just moved there....

but that is a theme all over the world. very rarely to people want outsiders coming in. unless trying for economic stimulus. which FLA clearly is not currently concerned about.

I personally love when new people come in. I simply don't want too many doing so.

I also love folks coming to jersey. best state in the union.

it keeps the real estate costs up. which suits me just fine for the time being.

I know. I just moved here almost 5 years ago and now I want to shut it down. lol

But seriously, it’s not as populated as where I’m from (Delaware County, PA). At least where I moved to…

Neighborhood gator

As a native Floridian I’d say that gator is probably closer to 6’ than 9’. 7’ long is possible. It’s hard to tell from the picture. Also, please note it’s getting into mating season for these guys. They will find any water source they can fit in to call their own while looking for a mate. Don’t be surprised if there is others found walking through the neighborhood, they’re just looking for a place to settle down. They’ve been known to be under cars, in pools and even trying to climb fences during mating season.

It’s going to sound crazy but we OFTEN played in gator and snake infested waters as kids. Even waterskied in some of the same bodies of water that were large enough to get a boat in. Never had issues, except the one time we accidentally caught a small gator while trying to go fishing. The park ranger rolled up to three kids (one in a tree) and a pissed off 3’ alligator on the bank all wrapped up in fishing line. We were told to leave the park and our fishing gear was confiscated. I presume the ranger took care of letting the alligator go.

As long as people aren’t feeding your resident pond puppy it will most likely stay far away from people unless they’re very very small (imagine 3’ or less).

I’d be more worried about the kids abilities to swim if they fall into the lake or possible snake bite from playing along the bank and stepping into a Moccasin nest. I’ve known people that got bit by snakes and I’ve heard of a lot more drownings than alligator attacks or shark attacks.

Water safety and awareness is something that I don’t feel is taught or prioritized as much as it should be. With it, a lot of the risks with Florida waterways would be mitigated.

How old (roughly) are these children playing at the pond bank unaccompanied? I don’t recall being unaccompanied around water until I was around 8 and I think that was a pretty good age.

If there's water in Florida you have to think there's a gator in it. I look in the toilet before I sit down.

So, golfing in Florida... wish i could post this vid i took as it's LOL. At a course, if you hit the golf ball past the hole, on the other side of the hill was a gator. Looked like he was waiting for the next golfer to eat. LOL

i'd gladly take my chances against a gator versus a Grizzly bear., rattler, Chicago, skunk, London, hippo, etc.

I always find these statements hilarious. I’m the only member of my family currently not living in Florida. Some have been there for three- four generations or longer while others are first generation. Just depends which fork in the family tree you take. Seems the newer you are to Florida the more likely you are to tell others they’re not welcome. Good thing no one needs anyone else’s permission. Even more ironic is the amount of money in Florida today that came directly from places like NY and NJ. There’s a reason it’s earned the nickname “God’s waiting room.” It a giant retirement community for the rest of the country. Oh yeah they’re going to keep coming.

I have seen snakes come out of the toilet on two occasions in Florida. One was a cottonmouth.

Someone has to be the TRF unauthorized #FloridaMan. .

Pre '76, so not my entire life yet have done the 'tour' of Miami, ... near Skeeters,... and now in God's Waiting Room (helping mom and dad living on God's Island With Key Club for years, mom passed a bit back... it's a typical Florida life).

You do make a good point, they

just

keep

coming.

They also keep building on an industrial scale. Developers makin' bank!

As a long time Floridian I’ve learned a lot about gators. Some has already been covered but here’s my contribution.

Gators are naturally afraid of human beings. They will not come near you unless you go into their waters.

Also gators lose their fear of humans if they are fed by a human being because now they will associate humans with food and they will attack.
This is why it is illegal to feed alligators in the state of Florida. You can be fined and or put in jail and then the alligator must be destroyed. It is an apex predator and vital to the Florida ecosystem.

The problem I have worked out is by the time you have determined if an alligator has been fed by humans it’s too late so stay away from them all.

Somebody feel free to correct me if I am wrong about any of this.

Also. Piss off we are full.
And I am much more afraid of ticks and Lyme disease than gators.
There’s no where else I’d rather live.

As a kid I spent lots of time in FL lakes swimming, skiing, wading with alligators. I survived. Didn’t bother them intentionally or feed them, stayed out areas they sun bath and weedy/marshy areas.

They’re everywhere. At some point you stop caring. I’d worry more about wild boar and bears in FL. Bears will trash your cars, garbage cans, or you to get to food.

Man! I miss Florida. Lived in Boca for 5 years when I was a young kid with my parents. Loved these beautiful creatures too. We were right on a lake and during mating season they were out and about doing their thing. Maybe we were more respectful as kids, but if we saw one, we avoided the shore and hung out by the pool instead.

Florida to NJ and NJ to Medellin ...

Backwards!

Mr Goat has a good take on it but Alligators are not a patch on Saltwater crocodiles.

Most people in Florida are not actually natively from Florida. Something like 67% or so are not from Florida.

So if native Floridians "closed the borders" they would actually live in a swamp with way more alligators :)

I joke mostly as we all do it. I recently moved to a different state and after 2.5 years; I don't want anyone else moving here haha.
