Its a great watch but a tad small for my wrists. But seeing it in person makes you a believer in its beauty. I havent seen one of its bigger brothers yet in the 40/41mm case. Must resist..............

What do you guys think about this rolex to start with.
As im new to watches i thought i would want to have something not that flashy but still gold as i like it the most.

Looks like a Re-dial, on a 18k Bombe 6590 – price is about right, not sure about the bezel

Papers are quite rare at that age ......

Or you run a risk of being disappointed. If you can’t wait long enough to gain experience, go to an Official Rolex Jeweler who sells pre-owned as well as new Day Dates.

Yeah 77T youre right about the experience.
You only have 1 first experience with a new realm so gotta make it fun. Im going to see the 1030 rolex in a few hours if it feels good ill pull the trigger.

Hey guys, so to update this story ... i bought my first watch and it really feels awesome.
This has had one owner, with papers, he died and the heritage sold it.
Serials match, buckle too.
I feel the dial is original, but anyhow the experience is strong and im living it.
If theres a slim chance its not, ill pay my tuition fee and still be happy.
I got it for 3500 eur which is 4300 usd.

I think i made the better choice for the first watch, as i learnt so much the few days i got info on this forum. There is true depth to this that i shall uncover.

On the question of “re-dials” – or more correctly “restored dials” – if done properly, the effect on value is negligible on these watches – on a GMT or a Sub, maybe, but not on a dress watch that’s going to be worn on your wrist

The 6605 from 1957 in my avatar is a recently restored dial, and Rolex themselves have a policy of making a watch look like new each time it’s serviced, so it’s perfectly acceptable as far as I’m concerned

If yours was done (at all), it was some time ago – but I’ve found that “swiss” at the bottom of the dial denotes Radium, which can leave traces on any dial, most noticeable on white faced dials. I only ever found one other 6605 dial like mine that was original (although cleaned), and it still showed in a couple of places

In the two examples you so kindly posted, you will see that the second one says” t-swiss-t” at the bottom of the dial, meaning post 1960 (or thereabouts). If yours says “swiss”, then it’s undoubtedly pre 1960, which you will be able to confirm by the paperwork. The second picture is also of a different model, and a champagne dial, and as lume technology progressed, the potential for dial deterioration diminished. This may explain the higher price for the second watch, but if I had the choice between the two, I’d still choose the one that you bought, and for many other reasons than the price

With vintage, it’s not always about the money (though IMO you have done well)

It’s an exceptionally classy watch – enjoy it in good health ……..

Just get an 18238 from bobswatches.com I'd guess it will be about 11k.

Yep. Exactly. You’ll learn a potentially very painful lesson not taking this advice. The trusted sellers here have earned their reputations. I wouldn’t buy something this expensive and prone to fakes from anyone except a trusted seller *on this forum* or a trusted AD (authorized dealer).

if you can stick with 18238 do so as the 18038 without proper tuneups can cause problems in keeping time. i.e. the 18238 have a bit more legs on them to keep for the future.

but a good 18038 you can find with just a leather strap is a good entry point. some find the president bracelet a bit much.

Thanks for all the knowledge, some things you never think of when you start out.
My interest has grown so that i will be reading some and just enjoying my first watch so ill get the practice in.
I like the gold DD, but with my lifestyle, as i like to explore cities and take the road less travelled, my concern is that i will be emptied soon walking around with that piece.

I wanted to ask an opinion on the buckle, as its probably not gold plated as a jeweler told me.
I dont know whether a 1956 1030 had a full gold buckle or plated as standard.
Also, all opinions of the whole watch appreciated : )
