Precisely my thoughts. I’ve had many sport Rolex; never a Daytona. It just does not sing to me. And having no date is a downside for me.

The SD is a great #2 pick to the Daytona. It’s gorgeous and you get a lot for your money

Daytona is very popular in a subset of people.

I was/am one of those depending on the day.

Some days its perfection and some days it is small and hard to read, too busy etc.

I woke up today thinking about one...

From an icon history piece well, then its one of the coolest.

To answer your question, No. Daytona, for me, is not the be all end all. I’ve only recently started looking at the Daytona with a mind to purchase. There’s more “than few desirable” models out there. As mentioned, it’s hard to read. Especially if you’re past a certain age and require readers. It’s a nice watch, would be a nice addition to a collection, but you’re using very broad strokes in a forum that has people that own probably one of any Rolex made.

I bought a GMT and two Subs before I picked up a Daytona. I was never too interested until Rolex came out with the ceramic versions.

not a huge fan of the daytona, too small, hard to read, no date, not useable seconds/minute dial. Can call me a liar, but i would rather have the Omega white faced speedmaster with the new coax movement. has a date, legible, and better size for my wrist. oh, and you can walk into a store and actually buy it :)

Everybody loves Daytona when they find it at the AD for MRSP ...

Owners that bought a Rolex other than a Daytona- Why?

Because I don’t need a chronograph and value legibility over everything else. This is a classic example of a WIS / TRF narrow view. Seeing that a ladies DJ is the most popular selling Rolex, it would seem your definition of “desirable” is skewed?

Come to think of it, is this a serious question or did I get stopped by a bridge troll?

Yes. Nice watch, but holds not interest for me. Would leather have almost any other Rolex than a Daytona. Just personal preference. And that is what it is all about.

The Daytona is great, but realistically my chances of getting one are zero. Would I rather wear a Rolex I love just as much (if not more), or no Rolex at all?

If I "put my foot down" and bought a Daytona instead of something I actually wanted to own, then I would be the one settling for less.

Daytona is the bottom of the barrel in the pro line for me. Hard to read, too small, worthless complication, no date, priced absurd, just ugly...yuck... Others love it.

The Tudor Black Bay Chrono is twice the watch at 15-20% of the cost of an overpriced Daytona. It actually has a date and is 41mm. All it needs is a cerachrome bezel.

To each their own
Boom

daytona is nice but i'm not sure if i'm just buying into the hype. Got a sub because i'm basic and i'm genuinely happy with it.

I held two Daytona’s in my hand a couple of weeks ago at my AD, but could not stop looking at that SkyDweller. I handed back the Daytona’s and tried on the SkyDweller, and that’s the one I walked out with.
Now Daytona’s are completely off my radar because it seems like that’s the one everyone wants. Next up for me is a DD.
