Step fathers 5513

Hi

I was left my step fathers 5513 rolex. Its in a bad way! I was going to sell it online but I cancelled it as someone said it was worth a lot more than I had initially sold it for so I cancelled the sale.

Now its where it belongs.

The problem is the dial is really bad. The hands are in a bag but the hour hand is damaged.

There are other missing parts like the bracelet and the number ring from around the dial.

Can anyone recomend what I should do?

In this coronavirus world, I’d recommend you wash your hands first. Then focus on taking better pics.

Also I never got why RM58 was written on the certificate. Should that be the serial?

What does the serial start with? Looks like 12xxxxx.

A lot of damage to the wAtch and needs work. If the serial number is right, it’s also got serviced parts in it.

Thanks it was worn by a man like me who worked with his hands his whole life and the watch shows it

what are service parts? You mean the crown in the bag?

You don't need to become an expert, just take good photos, describe everything that is part of the sale, and put it up for auction on eBay. Someone may have the parts to restore it, or they may take it apart for its parts. As mentioned above, based on the serial number on the case, the damaged dial is probably not the original anyway.

Did the person who told you it was worth more than you sold it for make you an offer? We can probably tell you if it's fair.

Looks like this watch has more than a few stories to tell. What did your step father do for a living? The history of the watch (if you know it) can help with value. As others have mentioned, better pictures will help immensely. Even a little elbow grease with a very fine rubbing compound (even toothpaste) on a cloth will help us all see through the crystal to the dial and hands.

Hope you keep it. As others have said, better pics would be nice. After this covid ordeal has subsided, get it to someone like Bob Ridley.

Classics

All that aside if the watch has sentimental value and a good story behind it you could always think about restoration. That being said, based on where it is now it would be a COSTLY endeavor to get it back to its original state. Sourcing alot of the original / period correct parts will be a labor of love and we haven't even seen the mechanical parts yet. If there is rust / corrosion in there it might be past its recovery point.

I do like the engraving on the back though...

5513

the 5513 is a great reference to have, theres a lot of experts and services available via the forum, as your Rolex hasn't cost you anything so any funds that you have to lay out to get it up and to a good wearable standard is nothing compared to the price you would have had to paid for the watch in the first place, the box and papers are also a plus,

my course of action would be to have it opened (by an expert) to see how the movement is looking, (post pictures) get it fully serviced, shop around and see if you can pick up a used dial and hands, the 5513 can be worn on a Nato strap and looks good.

do keep us up dated with this project and all the best you have a decent starting point.

all the very best "H"

Cheers and thanks for the nice messages all of you. I am going to take off the plexi and wipe the inside as a lot of the mess I thought was on the dial is just on the underside of the plexi. I might actually have to soak it for a while it looks like grease and dirt.

Still looking for the bezel, I only saw it back in December so its around

Dont soak it, you don't know if the watch is waterproof.

Hi cheers, but the plexi and the ring around it come right off, so I am just soaking those. Not the watch. But cheers for the advice mate

I will try and take some better photos when I have done this

I don’t think it fair when Ebay sellers cancel auctions because someone tells them they sold it too cheap that’s auctions
Sellers should do their research before listing
It against ebays rules and morally wrong
I wouldnt soak the retaining ring the fluid could get into the dial
It should come off with a thin sharp knife
Or give it to a watchmaker rather then risk anymore damage
Or take the $6500 which is fair considering the work that needs to be done

AUD, though, similar to CAD in value <checking xe.com> wow, AUD is a super-crappy 62¢ US right now, so that AUD6500 was USD4030 or thereabouts. Usually CAD and AUD aren't so far apart!

Would I offer USD4K for this watch? No, I already bought a beat-up one and had LAWW make it nice. But if I were a watchmaker with perhaps a couple of the necessary parts, I might.

If I were OP I'd keep it and fix it, but I don't know his sentimentality or his budget and remember HE'S not necessarily a Rolex guy, his stepfather was. I'm always initially amazed if someone isn't fascinated by a wristwatch but then I remember this is an expensive niche hobby shared by comparatively few people...being on this forum might give the idea it's more popular!

Yeah. I had it in my mind that it sold in the hundreds. AUD6500 seems like a decent buy but certainly not a steal, given the condition.

It's not important at all to clean the crystal, just take photos of the dial with the crystal removed so that the buyer gets a good look.

Find the bezel and everything all together as a package. If the bezel insert is original (questionable given the replacement dial), it has significant value.

How much did it cost you. I would assume you can 'easily' fix it up for 2-3k? If you don't want period correct insert.

No but I have had auctions cancelled by the seller and it’s not nice, fair or an auction
Imagine if a proper auction house acted in this way
And you can always set a reserve
