Rolex help

Hello,

I need a little help from the experts. I inherited this watch a couple of years ago and it has been sitting in my watch drawer ever since. I was looking at it and decided that I need to do something with it; either start wearing it or get rid of it. I know that it is a President but not much else. Can someone tell me, is the serial number where the band connects to the watch? (Sorry, I don't know the technical tern for this area). Is there anything special about the watch? If I decided to sell it, where would you suggest? I don't have any papers or a box with it, will this hurt if I try to sell it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TRF. That's a beautiful DD (Day Date). To find the serial number, you will need to remove the bracelet at the 6 o'clock end. The serial number is engraved on the outside of the case at that location.

If there is no serial number, I would take it to a jeweler who can authenticate it. But if there is no ser. no., I would have my doubts.

If it's the real McCoy, the replacement value for insurance purposes will be in the $20-23K range. You could probably get between $8-10K for it on the open market.

Thanks for the quick reply. I thought that was where the SN might be. I am looking at the watch, just how do I remove the band at that point? Does it take a special tool? If I decide to sell it, where do you think I'd do best?

hi and welcome to TRF.

do you have a very very small flat ended screw driver. But they usually come with a watch tool kit ( and i presume you don't have one). otherwise if you know where your local jeweller is then you can take it to them and they will do it for you in minutes. How old is the watch?
i would also recommend probably having it serviced by rolex if it has just been sitting around for years. This way the watch will be returned to full working order and given a polish, and most importantly have a service report (that you will be given) proving that the watch is a genuine rolex. This is often important to potential buyers and will increase the price when you go to sell.

AS for where to sell ,there are various online sites- but maybe your local jeweller and watch dealers etc will buy it off you?

Okay, thanks for the info. I was able to remove the band this morning and here is the serial number starts with 886****, I think...the numbrs sure are small.

That SN would put it in the 1984-85 time frame for manufacture. Chris is spot on. Have it serviced, preferably by RUSA or a Rolex Service Center in Dallas or San Fransisco. They will clean it, oil it, replace worn parts, and polish it up so it looks like new. And you'll get a service certificate.

I will do that. Just out of curiosity, what do they charge for that?

I have decided that I'd like to trade the watch for a Sub or a Milgauss, plus some cash of course. Do you think I'd have any luck here? I did have it serviced at a local watchmaker's shop here in Pensacola, FL. and it is in perfect shape. The watch is very nice indeed but just not for me. Thanks for any advice.

I believe a full service costs around $500 (assuming it doesn't need any major work). Only problem is that the diamonds are aftermarket. I believe RSC would charge you to return it back to original and I don't think they would return the customized one that's on there now.
