Watchmaker markings on outside of case?

I'm familiar with watchmakers making tiny marks on the inside of a caseback when a watch is serviced, but how common is it to have these types of markings on the exterior of the case? I was looking at the back of my 16710 and noticed a tiny inscription on the outside of the case along the caseback. Looks like it might say "12 EF 76" but it might be EE. Watch is from 2000 and has an A serial between the lugs. A little lost on what that could mean even if it is a watchmaker mark. Thoughts? Photo attached.

I don't think I would be happy if someone left marks on my watch

Are you the original owner and had it serviced?
If so I’d bring it back to the idiot that did that and tell them you’d like an explanation and how the plan to correct it.

I am not the original owner. Bought via Watchbox a few months ago and haven't had it serviced myself.

I blew out the photo to make the writing legible but the marks are really akin to the watchmaker marks found inside case backs that are very small and hard to see unless the light is just right.

Quite a headscratcher. Falls under the heading of HUH?

I think that mark must came from the previous owner not the watchmaker.

Have you tried rubbing off? Wondering if watchmaker marked, intending to be temporary, then forgot to buff off?

Oh man, haven’t seen one of those in a while, you have to be very careful with this kind of thing.

It could be a spy watch full of polonium.

It's a Rolex, so full of unobtainium.
