Keeping the Hulk or Daytona SS Panda? Consolidating my collection…

Hey guys! I hope you’re having a wonderful weekend!

I’ve been thinking more and more about consolidating my collection a bit more, as I don’t get to wear everything I have currently.

I’m thinking about getting an AP Royal Oak Chrono (which would make the Daytona probably go away), and also an Aquanaut. Both watches are via a trusted dealer I got the 116500LN from back in August. I can trade in 2-3 watches + cash, and get both.

I’ve been playing around with the idea that it’d be cool to own each one of the brands of the Holy Trinity (I own already the VC Overseas Dual Time)

If I did the trade I’d need to keep just 1 Rolex, give the rest of my watches away + some cash, but I would end up with, 1 Rolex, 1 VC, 1 Patek and 1 AP.

I know it’s pretty personal, but my question would be here… should I give the Daytona away (I got it for two watches + 18k USD), as I could get one at retail in about 1.5-2 years from a trusted AD. Or get rid of a new card Hulk, which is already discountinued and will be impossible to get again at the same price I got it…?

I really do love both watches, but I don’t know if it makes sense to have two chronos — the AP one has the date, which is something I’m missing from the Daytona and one of the reasons it’s not my daily driver. I have come to realize that I need the date during the week, specially because of work/managing my team. I also think it’s likely that I could get the Daytona as I wrote above. I don’t see Rolex discountinuing their flagship watch just like Patek did with the blue 5711.

If you own/owned the 5167/1a or the 26331ST black dial, it’d be super helpful to hear you thoughts as well!

Thanks squad!

If you'd be ok without the Daytona assuming they discontinue the 116500LN than I'd say go for it since the AP Chrono would replace the Daytona. Nothing in your collection like the Hulk.

Keep the Hulk if you can reacquire the Daytona from an AD.

if you can get a daytona at msrp in the near future then yeah get rid of that one as it has the biggest premium. just keep in mind that an AP RO isn't the greatest daily watch. yes it can easily be one but it requires a bit more wrist awareness than a rolex so if that's fine with you then go for it

Green watches will fall out of favor eventually, plus, Rolex will undoubtedly make a new/different version of it in the future (as they did with the Kermit). The Daytona has been "The" Rolex watch to own for over 30 years......The Hulk, 2! You'll be sorry down the line.

what do you mean by wrist awareness? you got the date RO, does that make a difference?

due to the way the RO bracelet is polished it's just more fragile than an oyster bracelet and will also show every little scratch, so you end up being more careful about what you do with it because if you bang it on something it'll hurt. they're overall a more delicate watch than rolex sports models because of the finish and movements being more fragile than rolex's movements. it's kind of weird because they're heavier than a steel rolex but feel more flimsy if that makes sense. also the bracelet shines like crazy so that could be a negative for some people

The AP is not a Daytona. Regarding the LVC vs Panda?…..I have owned them both as well and would not consider the LVc a close comparison to the Daytona in Rolex land. You are not getting a SS Daytona Panda from a AD without years and years of waiting with possibly a excessive amount of junk jewelry purchases to even be considered.
It’s currently 3X it’s msrp so it’s not realistically going to be easy to replace without some major funds.
As mentioned above the AP shows every hairline scratch and magnifies it more than other designs.

The Daytona is a beautiful watch. So is the 116610LV. For me, I would keep the LVc as it’s a more special watch (IMHO), but I wouldn’t want to give up a Daytona if I had one, either. And I would take a Daytona over an Aquanaut every single day.

I have three Daytona’s. This may be personal preference however. Ever since I was in my late teens and early 20s it was always the Daytona that appealed to me. Back in the day (late 80s early 90s) the Daytona was still very much the runt of the Rolex litter. This was a carry over from the 4 digit days in which, contrary to popular belief, Daytona’s were slow sellers and unloved in a world hooked on datejusts. My zenith Daytona from back then is still in my collection. The Daytona has hit the stratosphere since then, probably due to the Steve McQueen hype and a few other factors. I therefore wouldn’t part with a Daytona and would rather ditch the hulk. I actually did just that some time ago. Green watches will become passé once again, but the Daytona won’t ever lose its moniker of top Rolex.

I would not let the hulk or daytona go for an ap ro or a pp aqua. Add them if u wish, but don't let those two great watches go.

Green and blue dials are just too beautiful to go out of fashion and green is the colour of Rolex. Keep the hulk and get your Daytona in 2 years - unless it's discontinued in favour of the Vienna in 2022.

The Daytona isn’t finished as nicely, but overall I think it’s a superior watch to the AP. I almost made the same decision and do not regret keeping the Daytona after really looking into the APs wearability/durability as a watch to be enjoyed.

I would keep what you have and enjoy them. Trading hard to get Rolex watches in the current market, if you intend to buy them back, is at best difficult and could erase any money made. Get through the holidays and see where those Rolex watches go, up in value, and decide.

Keep both the Hulk and SS Daytona for now until you can get another Daytona in your hand.

The Hulk and SS Daytona are the keepers for me.

I would stay away from the grey market so you don't help fueling this stupidly inflated market. If you can't get what you want at retail now, just be patient or switch your focus to something else. Trust me there will always be a watch you love more than the new acquisition you got, no matter what it is. Hence, no I wouldn't do the trade.

Would you have made this trade in a pre-2016 like market? On paper alone you're trading a lot for the AP chrono, which doesn't have an in-house movement and will likely be replaced in the lineup in the near future (I think).

I made the mistake earlier this year trading my Hulk to move "upstream" which didn't feel rewarding or satisfying at the end of it. I paid the price in rebuying. So tread carefully as you're selling some of the hottest Rolex models in the market currently, it will not be fun to replace.
