Diminishing Submariner power reserve
I'm lucky to own both an Air King (pretty much the day to day watch) and a Submariner both from circa 2002. The power reserve on the Sub is starting to diminish. Its been serviced in 2008 but never since. The AK seems to have a more constant reserve and has never been serviced.
Some questions for the more knowledgeable.... 1) what are the feelings on servicing, and are there any persons out there that you would recommend 2) is it because the AK is used much more, i.e. if the Sub was the day to day would the reserve stay greater 3) since acquisition the AK has always been the better timekeeper but we're splitting very small time hairs here. Your advice and comment is greatly appreciated. |

If your Sub is 13+ years since its last service, then it's due an overhaul.
Some will say you need to have a watch serviced every 5-10 years depending on use, others won’t contemplate sending a watch in until there's an issue. Either way, your watch appears to be a prime candidate for a bit of TLC. I would get in touch with the Rolex Service Centre (RSC) down in Kent and talk them through your issues and see what they suggest. |

Both watches use the same movement.
How are you checking the power reserve and how much are you losing?

Bill Rice in Beverley, East Yorkshire, is a good independent Rolex guy. I had some poor service issues with the RSC in Kent back in the 1980s/1990s and have avoided them ever since. They might have improved by now, of course, but once bitten . . . . . ! Bill Rice's website is: http://williamricewatches.com/.
From what you say I think it might be high time to get your watches serviced. Stan. |

Sounds as if your Submariner's mainspring may be getting weak, or sticky, or both.
The spring normally weakens over the decades. Some last a long time, others not so much. It's not a fixed science when it comes to these springs. Time for a 'look-see' by the service department. Your issue will likely only worsen.
