Datejust 1630

Hi All,

Unfortunately, my father passed two weeks ago and I have inherited his Rolex. I was aware he owned a Rolex but he has not worn it for years and I was unaware of the reference.

From what I can gather it is a Oyster Perpetual Datejust 1630. I believe he received it as a gift but I do not believe it was new when it was given to him. I have no box or paperwork and have no idea if it has ever been serviced. It has been running overnight and appears to be functioning appropriately.

I've attached several photos and would welcome any feedback or comments on the watch. Based upon the condition and age it needs to be serviced. Should I expect any problem getting service from RSC for what I presume is a vintage model?

For now, this piece will complete my collection. My dad gave me a Thunderbird when I graduated, I have since purchased an Explorer, and now his Datejust 1630. My goal was to acquire three pieces to pass along to my three boys, unfortunately, I would have preferred to acquire the third under different circumstances.

Thanks.

Shawn

Sorry to hear of your loss and your dad left you a very nice momento. The 1630 is a rare piece, having been made for a very short time before the oysterquartz movement was introduced.

It looks to be in nice and original condition. What is the model number on the bracelet?

Had the watch serviced and received it back this week. I had it serviced by an independent watchmaker. He said the watch was serviced two times previously - once by Dallas RSC and in 2002 by him! Quite interesting to have it serviced twice by the same watchmaker between various owners.

The watch seems to be keeping good time. A complete overhaul was done with a very light polish. Still some minor visible scratches but since it's been polished at least twice previously, a light polish is all I wanted.

Wearing the watch today, however, it will spend some time in the safe. My oldest son was closest to my Dad, it will be his once he graduates from college. I thought about giving it to him on his 21st birthday this summer, but I think holding off a while longer is best...not sure he is ready for a Rolex just yet.
