I don’t believe there was any buyers premium as it was for charity.

It was the PP tailwind which brought me the privilege. Totally random. I was travelling for work and after a client meeting, saw the Christine’s sign right at the elevator saying preview of ‘the one’ collection available today only. Tried my luck and walk in with my card. They were showing the collection for certain Invited clients but was kind enough to let me in as well. The 6300a was in a show case but after chatting with the lady for a while about the charity event and PP, she ask if I want to look at it. Totally didn’t expect that. It is a big watch and the dial I very unique. Weight is good but I assume it is lighter than the G version materially.

It was a fun encounter! It is a watch which is totally different from anything I have seen. Very unique

The winner was indeed unexpected, being an important Asian collector who is not a regular face in salerooms, although the underbidder is an auction regular.

In fact, the winner and his party were not even sitting in the VIP area at the front of the room, which might imply they were not expected to triumph. The VIP area, made up of the first few rows of seats, was indeed filled with auction regulars, as well as Thierry Stern and several Patek Philippe executives, who all looked pleased with the result.

They indeed looked pleased.

JCB is also pleased probably with his Hublot result.

I assume the winner will take a huge tax write-off.

Yeah that is why some think the price went as high as it did.

Along the same vein, re charity, since Rolex is a registered charity, why do we not get deductions when we buy watches from Rolex?

Has anyone tried to claim before?

Could you please elaborate how the tax write off will work?

I’m assuming it’s somehow a donation to the charity vs buying it outright and proceeds being donated...but I’m not familiar with the auction or an accountant...just guessing

Not in the UK - you can only claim income tax deductions against a donation, not when you have received goods in the transaction.
Now you can normally deduct the difference eg if you paid £10k at a charity auction for a holiday worth £1k you can claim deduction for the £9k.
However, with the Only Watches, there is no other comparator (as it is a piece unique) so it is going to be hard to convince the taxman it is worth much less. Therefore the auction price is the market price.
However, again in the UK, there is no capital gains tax on machinery (such as watches and cars) so there is comfort in the fact that if/when this comes up for sale and fetches say £50m the profit will all be tax free!
