Father’s Rolex

In spirit of Father’s Day, thought I would share an update on the watch that got me started in this crazy hobby of ours.

My father’s Rolex Datejust 1601 came with an end link that was missing the 14k piece that is glued on. You can see it quite clearly on 6 o’clock side.

I’ve always been wanting to restore it and initially asked RSC if they could do so. Unfortunately they can’t and would have to replace the bracelet entirely with a newer service bracelet.

Well since that wouldn’t work for me as this watch is special and I wanted to keep it as close to what dad wore, I searched for a 255j end link with 14k gold mid piece. Well it took a while but I was finally able to source one and it arrived just in time for Father’s Day!

With a quick flip and a snap using my trusty Bergeon 6767, I switched out the end link and the watch now looks a little bit more complete!

Thanks for reading my little story. Happy Father’s Day to all the fathers on TRF

Happy Father’s Day dad!

Nice to have a special watch like that. Glad you could get the missing piece for the bracelet.

I really like those indices and the linen dial. Maybe I'm a vintage Rolex lover at heart. Not so much because their vintage but due to the styling. If there were a modern choice like that I'd choose it over the sunburst dials and lume filled batons.

Nick, I am so happy for you to have this special piece, you are obviously taking good care of it. Enjoy it my friend. I didn’t catch if your father is still with us or not, but either way, I am sure he is very proud of you.

Congrats on getting it all together again.

I know the feeling did similar repairs to my fathers old watch as well in the past. You’ve inspired me to wear it in his memory today. Happy Father’s Day!

Fantastic! Beautiful story, beautiful watch, beautiful memories. Can’t beat that.

I think this is the same DJ that my grandfather had which also helped kindle my interest. He and the watch are gone so cannot confirm but i think it is.

Happy Fathers Day

My Father-in law gave my youngest his DJ with exactly the same part missing ,from memory it was a pair off new endlinks required 455bs £280 about 12 years ago, my son only wears his Grandads watch occasionally. It was fully serviced and RSC fitted a new dial and hand set but it is like new despite being from 1988
