Bargain hunting

My parents, being the Filipinos that they are, love going to the Flea Market and buying all kinds of things at bargain prices.

I suppose it runs in my blood, albeit in the digital world. I love to frequent FB Marketplace and find bargains that we can use around the house. For example, I picked up a Hancock and Moore leather chair for $100 (quite a steal and nothing that leather cleaner couldn't get back to a nice shine), and this executive desk with matching nightstand and bookcase for $300.

Does anyone else enjoy the hunt? Pics below are the sellers' pics - still actually have to setup the office once we get to Monterey!

My wife and I live going to high end estate sales. We’ve picked up some beautiful items that are in our home.

Jesse, you’re speaking my language!! I love hunting for great deals at flea markets, estate sales, thrift stores and garage sales. It started out of necessity when I was young but now it’s just a guilty pleasure. I’m not above picking a great item up from the side of the road either. It’s essentially a treasure hunt.

I do as well. It’s been years since I’ve really done it though. There are definitely less things in my area with the city growing so big and sort of a shabby chic annerican picker sort of thing going on along with that.

Also it’s hard going to the shops with the kids since every shop has some antique vintage glass stuff put right where my kids will knock it over.

I miss yard sales, antique shops, estate sales etc…

I love searching for scores.

Found this Joss West pool cue at an estate sale last week, the lady gave me it free(I didn't know what it was at the time but looked like a nice beat up pool cue to me) ended up selling it to the local billiards store for $1500

Found the bracelet at a flea market the next day, 10kt and white sapphire. Paid $10
Found this beautiful virgin mary pendant thats enamel and silver for $2 at an estate sale today.
I find a remarkable amount of cool stuff

Why thank you kind sir. I still don't know how to attach images in PMs. I did try to send some

Another score from last week, an original 1985 floyd rose tremolo Bridge, not a bad find for $5.

Nice pickups, OP! My wife (Filipina) loves the hunt and the deal as well. Getting the best deal trumps anything, even the item itself.

My biggest deal I think was an original Mickey Mouse mechanical watch I paid a dollar for.

Why the "cheap" inference toward Filipinos?

It's them folks from India, I've found to be the best at bargaining or paying less.....

Oo naman.

It's lockdown here and I have probably bought a ton of $h!t online that I desperately want and not necessarily needed. Got meself an MBF watch stand too.

Mabuhay!

It's all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconveniences we have to deal with.

I love “going antiquing” as a nice way to spend a Sunday afternoon. My house is full of used stuff, and I joke that I can’t pass up an antique chair. The vintage and antique furniture construction is so much better than what you can get in a home furnishings catalogue today, and I just get the chairs re-upholstered to fit our taste. My primary desk is almost 60 years old, and my secondary desk is an antique wood-top cast iron bistro table.

My older son has the “collector’s gene,” as he’s enjoyed buying old guitars, fixing them up and reselling them since high school.

Loving the replies and what else everyone is digging up!

Here's the chair from my original post, now at our home in all its glory. Disregard the clutter in the background - we're gearing up for our move to CA this week.

That is an awesome deal on the Hancock and Moore, a piece that will last forever. Did the seller just not know what they had on that one?

She had a Herman Miller desk chair and she no longer needed this one. I told her that she priced it pretty low and she just wanted to get rid of it. Over a hundred people reached out but I was the only one that followed through.

Been using it the past couple of days and I absolutely love it. One of the most comfortable things I've sat in!

Very cool that she knew what it was so you don’t even feel guilty haha.

My H&M couch is ridiculously comfortable (and a very similar leather color).

Clear borosilicate glass pitchers and vessels for me. French press beakers are very handy in the kitchen. This mid-century Eames pitcher is a grail item.

One of my better finds, a crate of old metal-smithing anvil attachments. For shaping spoons, bowels, plates, vessels, of iron and silver, etc. A Colonial reenactoress / metalsmith was ecstatic to buy them at nickels-on-the-dollar.

Old woodworking tools are prized; the steel holds an edge better than all but the finest newer products.

There's often a very fine line between finding a bargain and taking advantage, especially with estate-type sales, but I agree, it is quite fun finding hidden gems and giving them a second life.

I would agree with this. I generally speak to the seller about the reasons why they are selling so low or at the very least bring up the fact that it's a great deal (as noted above with the chair I bought and the interaction I had with the seller).

I just bought a Technivorm 39730 CD-Grand 60oz. at an estate sale. The people were moving and had it priced at $30 without the glass carafe, apparently it was broken and the maker was replaced with a Keurig. I ordered a new carafe, it wasn't cheap but I am still into the whole thing for about $85.
