Vintage Tudor Submariner

Hello all

My watch collection is due for a cull to make space for a new piece. One of the watches I’m considering selling is a 1991 Tudor Submariner 79090. I only wear it on occasions due to the size of my collection.

I’m on the fence about letting it go because it’s an amazing watch in immaculate condition with a full set and service receipts.

Forgetting about value appreciation, do you think one day that vintage Tudor watches will be as collectible as vintage Rolex ever was?

I think it'll appreciate a little bit, but I don't think it'll get to the point of Rolex. After all, part of the appeal of Tudor is that it's more approachable financially.

That’s beautiful! I’ve wanted one for awhile but the market even for these is a bit crazy especially considering they use ETA movements which I don’t have an issue with.

No way I would let that go. Although that's not as collectible as a Snowflake the market value for these is still crazy as mentioned above.

Is the dial blue as well as the bezel?

If so, I’ve seen these before and like them.

It's a fantastic watch with a great look and would be an awesome companion on weekend drives in the country, or other similar sporting activities. Personally, I would hang on to it; it's a genuinely stunning piece!

Thanks for the confirmation everyone. I think I’ll hold onto this because I know I’ll never be able to replace it in the future.

The escalating prices of these is living proof that people will buy anything just because it looks good in a pic, which they absolutely do. However I found the 90's Tudors were just cheaply built imitations of their Rolex cousins. I bought one when unseen new when they were under £1k and I soon binned it off. I really see no point in them unless you can't afford the real deal.....they're like supermarket own brand cola....They ain't The Real Thing lol. Sorry.....sell.

Wow, this must be the most snobbish post I’ve ever read online.

With the exception of the ETA movement and the fact that the dial has a Tudor shield instead of the Rolex crown, this watch is no different to my 16610. How were they cheaply built when they used Rolex cases, crowns and bracelets?

As mentioned, my reason for considering sale is due to the fact that I now have 20 watches in my collection, funny thing is that whenever I wear this watch, it makes me feel special, just a pity there’s so many others to choose from. (First world problems)

I wouldn't get rid.
The ETA movements are proven workhorses and only going to get rarer that sub looks great it looks different having the Mercedes hands I'm used to the snowflake.
It's a keeper.

Have to agree. For perspective, I have 40 watches in my collection including RM, Journe, etc. - all the snobby stuff lol. I just looked high and low for a vintage Tudor snowflake to add to it and it’s not going anywhere. I’d hang on to it without a doubt.

Great looking piece and not very common to see. It has a bit more pop than the BB58

I wore a Tudor 75090 Sub everyday for 30 years until it finally stoped and I bought a 37mm Yachtmaster 268622 two years ago. I always wished I had gotten the larger 79090 blue like the one you own. The Tudor subs cases are Rolex sub cases, I had my watch restored by Rolex and it’s like new now. I don’t wear it as much now that I’ve been expanding my Rolex collection. I was fortunate to discover a wonderful watchmaker at the AD where I purchases my YM from who has helped me expand and curate my collection. Old Tudor Sub are special watches. I’d hang on to it.

That is a gorgeous Tudor that might be irreplaceable in that kind of condition. I think you'd be crazy to let that piece go!

I had that same reference back around the same time…but in my youth I sold that watch. Really regret letting that one go.

Don’t sell it, you’ll regret it. You say you don’t wear it very often and you also said when you do wear it that it makes you feel special. This is why we own watches. Twenty watches is a good start by the way. Keep it.

I would keep it. Looks beautiful in a picture.

I wish I could still buy this new. One of my favorite Tudor watches.

Beautiful example! I have a couple Tudor Subs and at times think of letting the 79090 go for similar reasons. I’ve held on to it and I’m glad I did it’s a keeper now and far rarer than any sub of the same era from the crown.
