Rimowa - worth it?

My current carry-on has literally disintegrated during lock-down and hence on the hunt for something new. Considering the original Rimowa and close to pull the trigger, but is it worth it? It's a lot of money.

Also what size? The smaller appears to be better size-wise base on airline compatibility, but do they really care
  1. 55x40x23 / 21,7x15,8x9,1
  2. 55x40x20 / 21.7x15.8x7.9

Guess it has somewhat the same value proposition as a quality watch i.e. build to last

If the cost doesn't bother you then yes it is worth it. Have all 3 types of carry-ons and my favorite is the original. Hybrid is the most versatile and will probably hold up better over time though.

Economy overhead bins could get tricky on sizing depending on the carrier, but flying business/first on Asian/European/US carriers I have never had issues with 55x40x23.

Absolutely not. I owned several of them, the checked bags get beat up pretty quickly. There is nothing special about them unless you need the look at me I bought a rimowa, I also believe it attracts unwarranted attention from thieves.

I use AWAY for all my suitcases, they have a lifetime warranty. I beat the shit out of them as I travel internationally quite often. Finally after 4 years the shell cracked, I took it to an away store and I had a brand new one within 2 minutes free of charge. Can't recommend Away enough, dollar for dollar it can't be beat.

In my experience, yes.

I got Rimowa aluminum suitcases in the 1990s when they were the equivalent of a beater / tool watch rather than a status symbol. Obviously completely beat up as I have travelled a lot back then and in the early 2000s, including a weekly roundtrip to the US for periods of time. One got refunded by an airline after they put a one inch hole into it by dropping it onto some rod sticking out of an airfield vehicle. Other than that still going strong 25 years later.

Stay clear if you can't live with scratches and dings on your tool watches... LOL

One thing I never do is have expensive luggage, usually a sign there is goodies inside.

Yes, go for the smaller to avoid check in problems. Still enough space.
Very good quality and great looks.

The Mrs uses Louis Vuitton Horizon, great and very light weight but I much prefer my Rimowa for ease of use.

Dents are part of the rimowa experience! My bags gets new dents on every trip but it's expected, over time they have gotten a very nice patina.
With that said, never checkin a half empty rimowa. So if one have very different needs of capacity I recommend getting different size of bags for different trips.

I have a Montblanc carry-on, which I got as a gift, think it looks a little better with wear than rimowa, also a bit cheaper. I would look into Montblanc before rimowa.

Heading to Germany next week for the first time since COVID and very tempted to pick up a Rimowa after years of wanting one.

My first inclination is to go for the Classic in Aluminum but as I think about it, I wonder if a hybrid in matte black would be much more practical. Anyone have any experience? Or photos of the matte black after some use? I love the wear that develops on the aluminum, but the black may be more my style, just not sure how the poly shell would wear over time.

I also got the Away carry on because I’ve been traveling more and more (and I have checked it as well). I’m really enjoying it. I’ve noticed more fellow passengers with them as well.

I don’t like dings and scratches in my watches, cars, or suitcases, but of course they happen. It’s less painful with my Away bag because of the cost differential.

Whatever you get, I suggest getting one with an integrated TSA lock. I had two TSA locks swiped from my checked bag in this past year.

20 years ago my in-laws were very heavily intro travel (literally every weekend by air, and 6-10 cruises a year, including 2 around the world cruises) and they swore by TUMI.
