First Rolex purchase - buying advice needed!

Hello all,

After much debate I'm going to take the plunge on a first Rolex..

I've decided to go with a white dial Explorer II. I have a Panerai and an IWC already and it's the only Rolex that doesn't look tiny on my wrist. I'm not a fan of the Deep Sea.

I have 4 options for making the purchase:

1. Local AD - cost is around $8800 incl sales tax
2. Airport duty free - I'll be in London in July and there's an AD in T3. Price will be around $7700 depending on fx rates but there's no guarantee they'll have stock and they won't place an order for me (they had 1 in stock when I called last week)
3. Second hand (not an option for me as I want something new)
4. Discounted dealer on the internet

I'm leaning towards option 4 as it means I can make the purchase now. I found these guys: http://www.resetluxury.com/

They seem legit, no sales tax to worry about. They emailed me and told me that the watch would be purchased from an AD in NYC and sent to me. Price could be below $7k which is a pretty decent saving from the local AD price.

Does this sound right?
Has anyone had any experience with this dealer?

My Dad always told me that if if sounds too good to be true......

cheers,
Fergus

Have you asked your AD if they can give you a discount?

Take your time, do some research on trusted sellers here, then go to London, see if they have the Exp2 and if not buy from Davidsw and the like here.

If you are confident in the London dealer, will they accept a substantial deposit on the Rolex you have chosen and hold it for you until next month? The other option you have (which would be my choice) is to purchase through one of the trusted sellers on this forum. You'll like save a couple of bucks to boot ! Good luck.

Airport ADs in London DO NOT sell SS sports watches. You'll have to go to high street, and then reclaim your VAT via global Blue when you get back to airport for your return flight.

Good luck.

Buy new from one of the sellers on this forum, save a few bucks and much more service orientated than AD's.
Why AD or Airport ? No added value at all.

Great choice for a first piece. I got the same for my first about 18 months ago. I still absolutely love it. A Trusted seller here is your best bet if you live in the USA. There are a few so do your research and choose the one you are happiest with. I would love to be able to buy from a trusted seller here but I live in S.E. Asia so I cannot due to import duties etc. Good luck whatever you do

I'd ask the AD for a discount, you don't get if you don't ask
Go with a trusted seller right here and your new baby can be on your wrist for the weekend.

Yep - no discount available. There's another AD near my office I can try so I'll ask them as well.

That's not a bad idea. The London AD is at Heathrow Airport. I think it's Watches of Switzerland who are certainly reputable. I'll check if they'll hold it if I pay them now.

That may not be the case. I called the AD at Heathrow T3 and they told me they had an Exp II in stock. I'm going to call them again and see if I can pay for now and have them hold it for me.

I think my first choice is still an AD at Heathrow. USD/GBP fx rates are in my favour at the moment so I'll get a good deal, tax free, in USD.

In parallel, I'm going to get in contact with a couple of ADs on here and if I can get a good deal, I may buy one before I travel. (I'll need that extra timezone capability for my trip to Europe!).

I'm also looking to trade a couple of watches as part of the deal: an IWC Pilot's Double Chrono and an Omega Planet Ocean...

First post..... still finding my way around.

Is there a list of these "trusted sellers" somewhere on this forum?

Thanks

Check out "Buyers/Sellers Who's Who" in the classified section. Buyers report the results of their transactions. I've only bought an Explorer II from DavidSW which was a great experience.

I know it has been said a few times within the thread but I would go with a very trusted dealer/seller from the forum. I have seen some NOS pieces and literally never worn watches at exceptional rates. Good luck, take your time and enjoy the process as best you can.

Us$ is actually quite weak against the pound sterling right now.
