It's not just about the durability of the watch, of which I have no doubt, but also about the practicality and also what others on the trail (who are very liberal, anti-materialistic and ultra-light weight conscious) think about it..

As you can tell by my screen name Im from the east coast (Jersey) near NYC, but I'm a born Californian and last year (2016) lived in Bay area for three months and spent many weeks in the mountains - Shasta, Lassen, Tahoe, Yosemite, Ansel Adams Wilderness And a Mount Whitney Day Hike Summit...

... with no watch... checked the time on my iphone...

What do do you think? useless, extra weight.... or hell yeah, take it to the top of Whitney this time!
Well it is a tool watch and should be used in these applications. Also it would be insured, so no issues there. Lastly, every opportunity is taken to enrage liberals, so to me that might be the best reason to wear it.

For me I want to be wearing something I can depend on; last thing I want is a watch running out of battery. So hell yes, likely my Exp II as well. If worrying about scratches and wear then leave it at home and get something you can afford to wear.

Wear it. Well it well. It's not a little old fashion and it's not a little out of time.

What is a Polar Explorer model? Can not find it in Rolex line up. Hiking and back country. My experience with my first Rolex. Bought it in Vietnam and wore it for my last few months in country. Rain, humidity, heat and cold ( in the highlands ). Wore it when I rotated back to the states and last few months in service. Wore it for a number of years, until I sold it and purchased a new Rolex.

How very self centered and narcissistic of you to think liberals give a hoot about what you obsess over on your wrist while out hiking.

A most peculiar insight. Curious. If wearing a Rolex suggests a conservative leaning, what watch brand is an obvious indicator of a liberal? Surely you are jesting.

Rolex does show up on the wrists of many of those in the "conservative" Hollywood TV/film industry.

Just realized that poster only has a couple of posts, so maybe he's just trolling.

Anyways, wear the Exp II on mountains!

this guy is talking about serious backcountry/mountaineering stuff. The kind of stuff where if you need help, you're only going to get it from the other people out there. Being concerned about what others think of you in those circumstances is not the same thing as it is in the rest of your life.

Yes I would - but only if it was a stainless steel model.

If I owned a precious metal Rolex, say a full gold Submariner or Sky-Dweller, I would not risk it.

No one outside watch circles knows what an Explorer II even is. Infact it's one of the more 'sheeple friendly' models. Perfect for your purposes imo.

Personally, I like to equip for the occasion. An expedition is a great opportunity to exercise some variety in one's collection and maybe take a vacation from being a Rolex guardian. Throw on a G-Shock Mudman, beat it up in the backwoods and enjoy being reunited with your precious after the trip.

I wear mine everywhere. They are rugged tools not meant to be left home in a safe.

And on the other end of the spectrum are celebrity Rolex wearers like Brad Pitt (among others) and the Rev. Al Sharpton. George Clooney wears an Omega (probably because he is a paid endorsee for their advertisements).

Yeah, that was my point. Tons of liberal people in a Hollywood (and elsewhere) wear Rolex watches. I'm not sure why that forum member was politicizing Rolex.

Satellites go down, or batteries fail, and that cell phone ain't worth sh!t. The Rolex will always work as long as you're moving.

Plus, the GMT functions as a compass.

If you are in the woods, and your watch is ticking, would anyone hear it?

By all means wear it. My first Rolex, which was bought in 1982, was worn everywhere. While I can't remember which ding, nick, or scratch happened where, I do remember all of the places I traveled. And that watch was always on my wrist. Wear it and remember.

Yes. I have worn my Deepsea to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar as well as diving numerous times to depths of 50-120 feet :) A variance of over 18,600 feet. Performed flawlessly.
