I'd like to see wider bracelets on the Subs at 22mm and bevels on both the Subs and GMT Master cases. Otherwise no changes. I think these are logical progressions for the models

I think there will be a change to slightly slimmer chamfer lugs. SD43 looks good with them.

I think the non-WIS buying public could care less about the case shape, . . . . . . . . Rolex is on the dial and it cost a lot of money. .................................SCHWING !

Sounds good in theory, but some models do sell better than others, showing customers do exercise some judgment when making their choices. All Rolexes have Rolex on the dial and cost a lot of money. Within that framework, customers have a range of choices, and will pick the watches they like better than the ones they like less. I think dismissing macro sales patterns as sheeple behavior is yet another part of the self-affirmation of the forum bubble.

5 digit owners/fans are in a no-mans land because they are not in the latest and greatest crowd and they don't qualify for vintage status. Also it's always the new models that everybody is talking about because one can't go on a waiting list to get a superseded model or vintage. If all one can get is the new stuff, then that's naturally what everybody is going to be able to talk about. The same thing happens in car clubs dedicated to a certain type of vehicle, where there are nearly a majority of new comers that have bought "the latest and greatest, and the celebrities in the club also have the latest. The people with the slightly older stuff are relegated to playing in the garage with their cars by themselves until their favourite models are "rediscovered". In summary. If all one can buy is the new stuff then it's easy to get confused by a perceived level of popularity due to sales figures alone. After all. Every one of the 5 digit models were sold out as well, along with the 4 digit models that preceded them. |

Unpopular opinion: the 114060 is the best looking Submariner ever.
With all the upsizing lately, what makes you think Rolex will all of a sudden go smaller when they’re making every other watch bigger?

Not smaller.
just wider End links and Bracelets. Just a little laying back of the squared off lug tip would be good as well. |

If the Sub shape comes out unchanged, I will stick with my 16610 and thank Rolex for saving my money

DD II....bigger then DD 40. DJ II....bigger then DJ 41. Smaller lugs on the SD4K, and SD43. Sport model cases may not get smaller, just maybe slimmer lugs/wider bracelet.

All good points. I'll draw a parallel to another forum phenomenon, though, and that's the popularity of the no-date Sub relative to that of the Date. Both are currently available in six-digit form, but forum goers wax poetically about the "one true Sub." The no-date also typically has a good showing in forum polls. But it's one out of eight Submariner models Rolex produces, and is identical to one of the other seven but for the lack of date. This indicates the Date is a much more popular option among the buying public, but you wouldn't know that here. I tend to think the enthusiast vibe is very strong here, and skews toward watches that appeal more to the WIS, and less to the average buyer. I think that vibe may also lend to a seemingly outsized fondness for the older case style.

Stated in the context of Submariner 6 digit vs. 5 digit case. The NON-enthusiast buyer knows it’s a Submariner, that’s all.

Wider bracelets would be a huge mistake. A 20-16 taper makes for about the best bracelet you can get, both in comfort and visually. The bigger Rolexes, with 21mm bracelets or bigger, look terribly out of proportion. They haven’t gotten the taper quite right on the SD43 and Explorer II.

I’m not a Sub owner, but I prefer the current case and lugs to the 5 digits.

I suspect you are in a very small minority with that view. We all forget that the 16610 was less than 40mm and the 116610 is more than 40mm but the bracelet size is the same for both. If your profile is accurate, and your favouraite watch is your Huer Monaco, I can understand why you like the supercase, being that its not that far off the Monaco's overall shape and proportions

Hmmmm, I can't believe there is so much concern about this and opinion given as fact
The truth is some people like the 5 and some the 6...I have the latter and love it and I am sure if I had the former I would love it too as the differences are relatively minor in the scheme of things. For everything good about a 5 there is something better in the 6 and vice versa Looking at the pictures above - I see very little difference and the claim one is 'better' than the other is a matter of opinion and is just that I am sure whatever Rolex does they will sell loads of Subs as it is a classic watch and actually 90+% of people wouldn't know the difference or care....the fact is when I see a Sub out in the wild it is difficult enough to tell what it is from the glimpses you see never mind looking at the lugs etc |
