Curious what the consensus is around here, or if there even is one. Do you let your AP"s run down when not on the wrist or keep them going on a winder? What's better in the end for service etc...

I let all my watches run down when not wearing. But guess it all depends on the complications, if I had a perpetual calendar I would probably use a winder to keep it running and save the hassle of putting it up to date. I do not know what would be better in terms of service intervals. I would add that as long as I know AP boutiques do not use winders to keep their watches running.

You will always find a 50/50 split on this topic. I personally like a winder; however, I do turn it off from time to time to release tension on the main spring.

I let my watches wind down naturally. As far as service or longevity is concerned, it is recommended that you wind a "dormant" watch once a month in order to move the lubricants about. In theory, this increases the life of the lubricant and/or the parts.

Now, if you have an AP that you do not wear for more than a month, there is a problem.

I asked the head watchmaker at the AP boutique in Geneva about this last week....he recommended keeping your watch on a winder....

Before i owned an AP.. I started to obsess over this topic. I was less concerned with having to set the watch but more concerned about keeping things functional. I agree that this topic is controversial and you can read as many articles for and against.. I bought several good winders and now i rarely use them. I sometimes use the old fashioned way.. Some weeks I trade off between a couple of my watches. So what i do is when i think the getting towards the end of the wind and i want to wear the next day-- i change what i am wearing in the evening and naturally wind on my wrist so i am sure it will not peter out by the am. I do agree about winding on occasion if i don't wear on regular basis though

I let all of my watches wind down, takes a minute or two max to set and less wear and tear on movement that's standing still than one that's moving.

No. Have a nice one as well courtesy of the true gentleman David Farkas (perpetualman88)! But I can't bring myself to use it as I enjoy winding and setting my watches. Clearly I need a manual chrono!

I don't use a winder but every time I hear of an AP running fast the response from AP is usually "lack of lubrication". Maybe constant wear or using a winder helps keep the oil properly distributed in the movement.
