NYTimes: 5711 feature article...

Priceless free advertising. 5711 prices probably jump 10% alone on this article.

Separately, I think the new 5726 Blue is a way to try and satisfy demand for the 5711 Blue which can’t be fulfilled. I think it means they can keep production of the 5711 more limited, and shifting people towards the annual calendar instead. My view on the 5726 therefore is the 5711 remains impossible to get, and prices rise even further.

NYT: It Could Take 8 Years to Get This Patek Philippe. If You Can Get on the List.

Interesting times in watch collecting. Enjoying the current market. Though simplicity of garage sales in 1984 not bad either.

Interesting read and thank you for posting.

The recent rise in popularity is actually starting to turn me away from watches. I always liked Patek and AP because they weren't household names and they drew conductibility among WIS. Now anyone and everyone with $ want to buy what we've loved for many years. They want it not because of the history, the fine finishing or art of watch making but because its an in demand status symbol.

There is still Lange, Vacheron and Breguet?

I can’t help but agree with your sentiment. That said, I appreciate that there are also people that have come into this with a sincere interest for collecting. Twenty years ago, I literally could not discuss collecting watches with anyone...it is more dynamic now, albeit for both the better and the worse.

Love Lange but really only wear sport watches. When the overseas 2 came out about 10 years ago or so I had a huge interest in it but brand independence is very important to me. It was the primary reason I went with AP long before PP was because its still in the hands of the founding families and they invented the luxury sport watch segment. In the end I'll keep collecting Rolex, AP and PP sport models but I really like wearing watches that the average person doesn't know. APs and even RMs can be seen pretty regularly around here now. Even sitting in the small bar area of a local hole in the wall BBQ place the guy at the end of the bar was wearing a Ti ROO.

Ah, and there’s the rub isn’t it? We only want what others covet.

It is so true that the 5711 is becoming harder to get nowadays. I own it mainly because I like the design and the simplicity of 5711 with date and time only. It is good to know that it has been appreciated a lots in value

I feel so damn lucky that only a year ago I walked into an AD in the Midwest and picked up my 5711/1r for 4% off and no sales tax ... I can’t believe they’re going for 6 figures now
