Red Adair's Special Rolex

Does anyone know whatever happened to the very special Rolex Day Date President that Rolex presented to famed oil well firefighter Red Adair in 1980? A good close photo of it may be seen in the Stars and Stripes article published about his fighting a well fire in Germany in 1980. Does anyone have a close up photo of it?

Any confirmation on Rolex doing this? The settings are all over the place.

Sheesh, that 6 baguette looks badly off to the right but I'd say it's not helped with the minute track being so badly drawn on. It's like 3 segments to 2 off centre lol. To the right one of the minute segments is more like 40 seconds ha!

I'm assuming it was a real Rolex that someone refinished the dial for him? It looks like they base painted the whole dial, did the custom 'artwork' then repainted the writing and minute track (badly)

Either that or they unknowingly just managed to bag him a knock off by accident (no hallmarks on lugs mentioned?) and just added the artwork.

My guess is the watch was the gift, but someone prior to giving the gift decided to bedazzle it a little bit prior to actually presenting it. The dial is bad in so many ways and the engraving looks like it was done by hand with a hammer and nail set.

Well, maybe so to the comments but the watch would now be 37 years old. Red was a long time paid spokesman for Rolex and it was reported the watch was given to him by them in 1980. He is wearing this watch in the Stars and Stripes article about the fire and blowout he and his crew were fighting in Germany in 1980.

Extinguish Reds Rolex Rumors

Thank you all so very much for talking about my Bampa. I am Red's granddaughter, Sunny... & I want to confirm the authenticity of the watch. Yes it existed yes it was a one of a kind created just for him by Rolex when he was the spokesman. I held on to his wrist as a toddler & remember holding it from when i was 5 years old till he passed away. Unfortunately it was sold to someone at a bar in San Leon, TX & I would do anything to get any info on its location now. Please let me know if you have any info on whom purchased it. You can remain anonymous. Peace Love & Hellfighter!!

This.

Many images on Google, this being about the best, show it to be a regular black faced Day/DateJust, with fluted bezel, which does appear to have the oil rig on fire image below the hands, above the 6.

Absolutely not the monstrosity shown in the first image.

The diamonds on the dial are set in the same manner in both pics though. The baguette at 6 is sideways, and the rounds are are at the same angle as well.

The setting is very poor on the op though. The stone at 7 is into the markers and at 5 isn't even touching. As for the 4 and 8...

There's no way that that is the work of Rolex on that dial.
