5164 v 5524
Hello all,
I do not own any Pateks but am currently looking to add my first. I am eyeing either the 5164 steel or 5524. All things considered which would you add personally and which do you think would fit my collection the best? A brief background. I travel very frequently for business and I really like how simple and easy the gmt function is to use on the pateks. I am not a huge nautilus fan so I am not considering that at this time. I own a Rolex 16710 GMT which was my first watch I purchased but only wore it for a couple of months after learning of the 3186 movement. Now it just sits in my safe, I will likely sell this watch in the future, potentially to fund for 5524 if I go this route. I know to buy what you like, but I have to ask everyone’s opinion on future value. As I am not a millionaire I am very conscious on what I do spend my money on. Whatever I buy, I am planning to keep forever but in the off chance I do need to get rid of it which do you think has the higher chance of retaining the value. I do like both pieces, just need a push to one or the other and hoping the community can provide the help. Pics always appreciated. Additional considerations below. 5164 - about 15k cheaper, this is basically the difference of me selling my Rolex or keeping - appears the aquanaut/nautilus lines are in very high demand and prices continue to rise - more versatile for all attires? - shouldn’t mean much, but my brother has a 5167 and I typically don’t like to overlap 5524 - watch is 42mm, I have not been able to try this on in person. 7inch wrist, will it be too overpowering? - less versatile? - much harder to source

Depends on what you want more. 5164 is a great daily watch, it's versatile and waterproof. It's under the radar and stealthy. The 5524 is a big pilot and statement watch WG, big and heavy. It just screams attention.

In this case I have no idea on value retention. I prefer the 5164 as I like the size better and versatility the water resistance provides. I guess it might be a little strange seeing as your brother has the 5167 though he beat you to it!

As a 5164 owner, I can say it is a great watch, but so is the 5524. If you want light under radar daily watch you better go the 5164 route. I feel that WG is not for everyday use hence the 5524 will be for special occasions.
You said that you are not a fan of the nautilus design, but aquanaut looks very close , so this is a factor to consider. On the value retention front, I think aquanaut is safe bet as we already know that aquas do well . The 5524 is still relatively new so not sure but generally PM watches are not as good keeping value as ss ones. Personally I think the 5524 design is fantastic and I prefer leather strap to rubber ones but that is just my personal opinion. Good luck with your choice, the good news is whatever decision you take will be a good one Attached a photo of my 5164 may be it helps |

I’d go with the 5164 except I’d get the RG.
BTW, what’s your issue with the 3186 movement?

I love both of those 2 watches, but prefer the 5524. From a practical point if you want a travel watch for that can handle it all - Office, beach, pool the 5164 is probably better. If it’s purely business when you travel then the 5524 is perfect, and you can lock the pushers so you don’t inadvertently change the time and miss your flight!

I just bought one and have to say I am liking it more and more, even on rubber still feels like a highly classy, finesse piece.

No issue at all, it’s a fine watch. I am just not wearing due to potential appreciation. But that’s a discussion for another thread.

I use a 5164 as my travel watch. The comfort cannot be beat, and I prefer steel, better water resistance, and the rubber band for travel

I don’t know how Pilot Patek watches will do in the long run, pilot watches are more in the IWC arena in my eyes. I think 5524 it’s a cool watch but 5164 scores against it in almost every field.
I love mine Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Nice pic! I was wondering what the brown strap would look like on the SS. I had a Chopard with grey dial and brown strap and it worked well. I think better than green.

Thanks for the input all. I believe I have decided on the 5164. Now the hunt begins...

I agree I think it would look great , and I also think the reverse is true , meaning the black strap on mine. Cheers Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
