Help me decide: Rolex Submariner Date or No Date
I'm getting closer to buying my first Rolex. I've loved the Submariners for years and will be getting a black stainless. At first the date has been of no consequence to me and I thought it might be a pain to make sure the date stays correct. But...then I started to think that it might be nice to have the date right there at a glance.
What are your thoughts about the convenience of the date being there, and also I'd like to know about the collectibility of the date vs no date. Although the dates are $1,000 more retail, they don't seem to be that far apart on the secondary market. I plan to buy a used one in excellent condition, with the newer band and ceramic. Any thoughts and advise is greatly appreciated. I love the forum, been scanning through it for a couple years on and off. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

Either or for me, but I sometimes like the look of the no date.

I have a ND. I love it, but a date would be nice sometimes. I have other models with dates, so it's no issue. If it will be your one and only Rolex, maybe go for the date.

I have the date, but I like the non-date too. I'm just used to being able to get the date, at a glance at my wrist. Also, when I think of Rolex, I think of the bubble.

If this is going to be your only Rolex, get the date. When I bought my first, I thought it was going to be my first and last- wrong! I was bitten by the bug- like most of us here at the forum. More followed. So looking back, I would have gotten the 114060 Sub. Ultimately your choice but either way, you can't go wrong!

I had this decision about a year ago and went with the no date. My rationale was that the Submariner was originally intended to be without a date when it was introduced and the date model was just sort of an add-on later. I like the simplicity of the no date as well as it's the modern version of the famous Subs worn by Sean Connery, Fidel Castro, Steve McQueen, etc etc. As a historian, I appreciate this historical connection. Plus the cyclops takes some getting used to and on a sports watch, it never quite looked right. Better on a datejust or day date.
As far as resale value, the date model is worth $500 more on the used market but costs $1050 more BNIB at an AD. I also think the no date is a bit better to fly under the radar which can be good when traveling in unfamiliar territory or foreign countries. Just my $0.02. |

Date if it's your only, no date if you have a date watch.

That's a very debatable topic here!! For me...date. I've never been able to keep a no date watch in my collection including several Speedy Pro's.

I will throw the SDc into the mix. Fantastic piece. Really no wrong choice though.

Cyclops or not? If you want date without cyclops then SD is an option.

Both are great. It depends on do you really need a date and which design appeals to you. I prefer normally watches without date so went with -

I just bought the no date. I've always preferred the ND because I think aesthetically it is a more balance looking watch. I am also not a big fan of the cyclops, I find the date is hard to see at a certain angle with the cyclop. Here's mine I picked up not too long ago.

I don't like the cyclops eye so I went with a Sub C no date. I do like the date Window on the Sea Dweller. I wish that it was available on the sub C.

Some folks become addicted to looking at their wrist for a date..
If you aren't one of those, no reason to begin such habits now..

I like the look of a no date best but if this is going to be an everyday watch a date would be a requirement for me.

Had the same issue recently. My opinion:
-if this is your only watch get the date version. On the long term you might need it and want it. -if you have more than one watch and wear them on rotation than get the ND ceramic. I find the clean dial more pleasant to the eye, it's closer to the original Sub and you save 1k $. I also belive Sub ND dresses up a bit better than the date model. In the end, I got the ND but that's because I also had an Explorer 2 with date. These are my arguments and there is no right or wrong. Different perspectives only.....

I prefer the symmetry of the no date myself, but I do miss the date.

I have the date ... very useful, and I generally want a date function on any watch I wear (that said, I recently bought an Omega Seamaster 300, which has no option for a date, and I love it).
But if you're going to wear it a lot, I would get the date. |

If this is your one and only, I'd suggest getting the date. If you already have a tech to wear in rotation with a date, then I'd opt for the Submariner as its a cleaner looking dial.

I have owned both and currently have the ND and the Hulk. If I was to only have one the ND would be my choice. Balanced dial and I do not see them very often on others wrist. The Hulk is great also but it is an add on for me.

I prefer the no date.
Easy question to answer, do you need a date or not?

I prefer the look of no date. But if you need to be reminded of the date multiple times a day, then it only makes sense to get the sub date.
