Identifying Rolex from the 1950s

Hi. I have inherited two Rolexes from my father and need some advice so I can identify them properly. Am I correct in thinking that on one side of the case is the serial number and the other the reference?

Would be grateful for any insight.

Thanks and photos to follow.
