Lack of interest in Tag

Why the lack of interest in Tag? I’m in the market for a nice Automatic sports watch, but with the current bubble pricing on Rolex, I’m starting to look at other brands. Omega pre-owned are also starting to creep up there in price.

I stopped by my local Tag AD (also Omega, Hamilton, Oris) and found a couple nice pieces that came with a discount.

Why no love from the watch fanatics?

Anyone with any sense at all, buys TH pre-owned — but for some reason, even though their designs are often visually appealing, they simply fail to grab the attention of seasoned watch aficionados.
It’s the vintage Heuers which are mostly desired, and some of the new Heuer only branded pieces — the rest just sink quicker than the Titanic!
Obviously they’re finding buyers somewhere, given that they make circa 300K pieces a year.

Pre-owned is key. They lose 30-50% MSRP day one. I really like my Titanium Aquaracer.

Agree on the depreciation aspect... would only consider a used piece. But at 50% of msrp for a lightly worn model, I feel that the Aquaracer represents a great value in an automatic movement.

I've owned a few Tag's, all bought used. I'm not sure why so many dislike the watches and the brand it seems, but I've really enjoyed mine and they are typically my "beaters"

Great pic! I think they discontinued the date on the left hand side. Local AD currently has a blue version with steel bracelet for 50% off MSRP.

Do you think you answered your own question when you agreed with
the depreciation issue with Tag watches?

Add to this that we are on a Rolex Forum.

I have a older Tag sports that my son wears.

Could it be a lack of interest rather than a dislike?

I can find a model I like from nearly all manufacturers.

Fair enough, but I posted this in the “other” forum.

It’s true that TRF is Rolex focused, but it has also become a repository for timepiece fanatics of all brands. The members here are very knowledgeable, argueably more so than anywhere else on the web, so why not ask the question?

And that's not too shabby. Mine came on a bracelet and full box set. I got it off a WUS member for $900. Given its an older model, but I love the exhibition caseback on it

I have a quartz S/el that I bought about three years ago. It's gold plated with a cream dial and has that "classic" 1980s-1990s TAG Heuer look. The watch is a midsize and ridiculously comfortable. I don't wear it often, but I still like the watch.

Last year, I was in a store in Raleigh, NC and a salesman showed me a few of the new TAG models. I felt like I was looking at Invictas. There were more giant watches and watches with skeletal dials that absolutely nothing appealed to me. Everything looked gimmicky.

Vintage Heuer? Sure. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Newer TAG Heuer? Nope.

I think for a lot of us, Tag is perceived as an entry level brand into the world of haute horology. I had a Hamilton and Tissot first and then jumped up to Omega, IWC and Breitling. But now, what I see from Tag is that they do seem to be offering some nice pieces, and even at MSRP they seem to offer a nice value. I’d definitely consider the new Autavia or one of the smaller Carreras on the secondary market.

This is spot on, I definitely picked up my Tags as an entry level watch to start off my collection before jumping to Omegas and Rolex

they used to have a fairly high warranty return rate , but that was a few years ago now ,,, maybe its just as its a rolex forum

1. It was never a high end watch, price wise.
I believe alot of watch marketing uses "exclusivity through pricing" as I learned from my Econ 101 class.
Look at its tourbillon, I believe it is priced 50% lower than any other Swiss tourbillon.

2. It was predominantly a quartz watch company for quite a while, which helped lose some creditability for the WIS crowd.

3. TAG was never a watch company. Again losing creditability with the WIS crowd.

4. It seems to me that TAG Heuer hit its zenith in the 80's, and I believe there is some backlash from the Yuppie tastes that has lingered since the 80's.

5. Resale value. Resale value. Resale value.

We've had a very similar trajectory. Hamilton - Omega - IWC - Rolex/JLC

There is definitely a negative perception associated with Tag because of their floundering and missteps over the past couple years. I think Tag are making a comeback, producing some real nice pieces and tributes as of late. It might take a while, but they can win customers and change perception.

I currently have a couple Tags in the watchbox. They still get looks from the average person when out on a patio or at a baseball game. I bought both of mine from a Grey dealer site for substantial discounts as my local ADs were very reluctant to negotiate. These are the two I currently have:

I've never cared for Tag but I must admit I really like the Autavia on a leather strap. Even the Monaco is looking appealing to me these day. I'm tempted to pick one up used and be my beater.

I enjoyed the brand in my early twenties for about a year or so, then I grew out of it. Never again. Vintage Heuer is a different story.

I was a Tag fan for about 10 years prior to buying my first Rolex. I still like the older Tags, but these new ones are too large. The one I wish I had gotten was the Carrera Targa Florio. I still love the look of that watch.

There are a few models I like. Overall I don't care much for the aesthetic and style of the brand. That's pretty much it. There are a couple a would be if the deal was ridiculous, but I know they wouldn't compete with my other watches for wrist time.

The only Tag model that I like is the Monaco which I bought pre-owned from a member here.

I have never owned a Tag but I certainly would. There are some very cool vintage Tags out there. The Monza, Carrera, and Autavia are all cool.
