I was in a AD about a year ago and the salesperson was wearing a 5980r, I asked him to see it, which he was happy to do, and then he showed me that the dial was dial of the 5980/1r not the 5980r. At the time I didn’t think much, but now I’m hindsite, does this make sense?

Congratulations Peter on a fabulous watch (that I thought you had already picked up). I look forward to seeing it in person in Italy sometime soon...

Is the only difference the colour of the subdial?

5980/1R has a black gradient dial and 5980R has a black brown dial.

May be he had swapped dials. Patek does make changes to dials at request but not for Nautilus/Aquanauts unless it is for some one like Claude Sfeir

Congrats, always loved that watch and the strap is really classy too, hope it's comfortable and not top heavy on you?

He made it sounds like it was a mistake and because of that it’s very rare, I wonder if they had just swapped dials with another watch at the store for a customer

the dial base color is also different. the 5980R has a more milk-chocolate dial, similar to the 5711R while the 5980 1R has a rather darkish dial base color.
cu soon in orvieto!!

We’re going to try to get the AR but it doesn’t come much... well see.
